You know who you are.

Really? Can't figure 10 or 20% in your head? If not, you can't use a regular calculator?

I would at least 70% of people can't

If that's true, it is extremely sad. I hope you're wrong, but I fear you're right.

I have a distant relative who not only uses a tip calculator but insists upon splitting the tip as well the bill almost perfectly among the diners. What a pain.

+1

I think it's the tricky 15% that gets them hung up.

I could see splitting the tip evenly, depending on how big the tip is, but you can't evenly split the bill. You've got to itemize & everyone pay for what they ate/drank. I bet s/he always orders Surf & Turf.

I'd keep that relative distant. :)

The thing that gets me is not only can't they figure it manually; they dont even know how to calculate the percentage as a decimal point in a regular calculator!? We need a separate application which takes all basic math out of the equation. If aliens invade, we are fucked.

If it's like three or four people, which it usually is in this case, it's just a lot of unnecessary quibbling that prevents you from leaving the restaurant in a timely manner. Eyeball the bill, figure out roughly what you should throw in, and be gone.

She must be about 60, maybe more. Dad's cousin.

Sometimes I find that the penny pinching thing is generational. I would rather just get the hell out of there, even if it costs me ten more bucks. Older people are more concerned with the pennies, even if they are well off.

My dad was a banker. He was a very, very sharp guy, especially with numbers. But he always carried a tip card in his wallet that broke down 10, 15, and 20 percent. He was a good tipper too. I think maybe he figured it was easy to use when he was loaded.

At least I don't tip said 15% on the pre-tax amount like my Jewish buddy was taught by his dad.

YOU DON'T TIP ON TAX!!!!

Yes you do -- unless you either go to one of the two bars in the world outside airports that break out tax on bar drinks or go through the mathematical gymnastics of backing out the already-included-in-the-price sales tax before calculating the tip.

I tip based on the total myself, but I rarely see a bill where the tax isn't broken out.

I tip based on the total, but I also take into account how much work the waiter/waitress actually had to do. Then again, I don't really give a shit. It usually ends up being about 20% - AS FIGURED IN MY HEAD!

My wife uses one, which is probably why it upsets me more.
