i have coached in leagues with MLB names and team sponsors. the kids seem to like the leagues with the team sponsors names more. What 8 year old wants to play for some out-of-town mlb team like the royals or the mariners? in the league i was in that did the mlb name they purposely didnt have the sox, cubs, brewers or cardinals either like that was going to cause a problem. the kids like the sponsor teams ive coached because it usually means a lot of pizza. plus its fun to have rivalries with teams with names like "modern shoe shop" and "maplehurst farms".

I agree that it isn't very inventive, but I think the league affiliation (Babe Ruth LL) already pays for it... at least for the boys teams. The girls have the made up names, some of which are pretty funny... the local PD sponsors the Bandits, a chiropractor sponsors the Backbreakers, etc.

Plus you don't have three different versions of the same team at the field, one with 1st and 2nd graders, one with 3rd and 4th, etc.

I don't get how taking a corporate sponsor is "more creative" than using an MLB team name.

The local association our kids played in used the random MLB names with jersey colors that do not mimic the big league clubs (somehow, the Yankees still managed to have a stacked team every year full of little pricks, though). All-star teams were either Red, White or Blue. When we first ventured into travel ball with my oldest son in Pony league, we were on a "Cubs" team, bearing the colors of the high school "Bears", which kinda made sense. Most of the travel teams we played were much more of the elite, year-round, private type, who embarrassed us their "Around the Horn ATH " gear and University of Texas clone "Stampede" unis. I was surprised how the kids were affected simply by the appearance of the other teams- we never had much of a chance. Since my kids have moved on, the pony and younger teams get t shirts of base colors with no team names, just an association logo, but their name on the back. The softball girls do as well, then the girls make up a name based on the team color- Red Hot Peppers, etc.

I remember wrestling against Tilden. Those brothers came out in robes like a boxer wears. I thought I was going up against Henry Armstrong or something.

Our league this year is sponsored by the Chicago White Sox. Every team is the Sox, just different colors. The division I coach in has 6 teams... Grey, black, navy, yellow, red and green. All button down jerseys with the Sox logo. Everyone seems to like it because they gave us nice jerseys instead of the normal t-shirt with random MLB team logo on it. Sox also gave some money to make improvements to some of the fields.

My son played in the fall league before and instead of the MLB teams, they used minor league shirts and hats. That was kind of cool. I think my son was the "Blue Crabs" (Red Sox affiliation I think)

I have no issue with using the team names. My son in teeball has loved playing for the Yankees and the Red Sox - it's actually gotten him more interested in baseball, especially when either of those teams or daddy's White Sox are on TV.

Now what is stupid is naming teams after some sort of team and not having anything that says that team. For example, my daughter's fall ball team was the Rockhounds (Midland Rockhounds take off) but wore Bartlett PD jerseys and visors. Really no reason for it at all.

Wow. This brings back some memories. Totally true. I remember the devastating psychological effect that an ubercleaner-uniformed team had on a team I was on.

What do the terms ATH and Stampede gear mean though?

ATH is Around the Horn, the training facility/team sponsor, and like Stampede was the team name. What was really impressive was the parents and their full-on team outfits and ballfield accessories- dugout tarps, team roster banners, coolers, equipment trailer, etc. Like watching a minor league team, but with only 20-30 fans. the coaches had obviously worked at their warmup routines to be as intrusive as possible. we were used to one team has the field, the other throws outside the fence. these guys would be right on the lines throwing, just kindof in your way, but not. then they took no infield, like they had warmed up before coming to the tourney. just ran some superbly choreographed drills and long throws, etc. really impressive when the coach, who sat on a bucket of balls in foul territory outside of their dugout, would call defensive plays and the team could move to double-play depth or put on a lefty shift like they had scouted out shitty little team from 60 miles away.

Could not disagree with the OP more. Put yourself in the kid's shoes, would you rather be named after a god damn donut shop or an MLB team?

With all due respect to you and your brother that is one of the stupidest things Ive ever heard in my life.

Your nephew has like a 0.00000000000001 % chance of playing pro ball at any level. Is it really worth repeating a year? While his classmates move on to high school?

I find that hard to believe, Panther. Or maybe he is repeating 8th for other reasons, but not because of some "primo edge"...

Back when I was in 7th grade, I remember we had a girl in the class that would have been at or near 16 if she graduated with us. I believe she had a late birthday, plus failed a year. A few months before the school year ended, they moved her up to 8th so she saved a little face by going into HS that fall at 15.

I guess so.

Never know how that's gonna affect a kid though.

Not to mention the risk of NOT getting a scholarship or playing at the pro level

Plus, how do you know the kid wouldnt have gotten the scholarship without being held back?

If there is one thing all of the Latin ballplayers have taught its to lie about your age.

I don't think 1 year ahead or behind really effects a kid. 2 years definitely can and does.

I didn't meant to take a shot at your brother by the way, it is the practice in general that I don't like and there needs to be something done to stop it, but there really is no way.

Not as extreme as repeating 8th grade, but my neighbors waited a year to start their 2 sons in kindergarten. They both have "in between" birthdays, so instead of being one of the youngest in their classes growing up, they waited the year and now are one of the oldest. My neighbors told me it was for sports. Not necessarily thinking it will help them become pros, but just for the advantage of being older than everyone else.
