I'm glad the boyfriend went upstairs when he did and that the firemen were unable to escape before the Police arrived. Nothing about their story seems plausible. One thing that surprises me in the story, is that one of the scumbags was just 20 years old. There is a huge difference between defending a Police Officer that has arrested someone for DUI after he has a BAC reading of Zero and this. In that case, there are substances that may be in the drivers system that impairs his ability to operate a motor vehicle besides alcohol. In this case, all evidence points to wrongdoing on the part of the firemen. The shoe doesn't fit.

It's two different scenarios, but like I said, there have been several occasions where you quickly make a judgment in a story, often defending the indefensible.
