NO WAY! I DONT BELIEVE IT! The Report says 5 players got paid!

5????

How about 500???????

Every single person I have known that played in a major college program got paid! Every single one of them!

Illinois! Iowa! Arizona! UCLA! and even the sanctified air of Evanston, Illinois...NORTHWESTERN!

Friend A , being recruited by multiple big 10 schools to play center in football. He is a smart guy and wanted to go to one of the better schools for his degree, but also liked the "Pencil money" the other schools made very clear he would get.

He asked about 'Pencil Money" and was told "Pencils, books and paper, when you win!"

Every single guy gets an envelope after a game. Whats in the envelope is another question per each players ability!

This report of players getting paid by agents is really some ground breaking stuff!

The ideal job is to work in the "Compliance Department" of one of the many schools in question. No actual work. Just a lot of questions to answer after the statute of limitations runs out -- and your head coach (Les Miles) is gone too.

No shit.

Like they are unearthing something unusual.

The one I love, and it's an oldie, is how Ronnie Harmon fumbled 4 times in the Rose Bowl after fumbling once all year. I wonder what would cause that?

I believe Northwestern has also been the subject of two point shaving scandals in my lifetime

Which is pretty comical when you consider the percentage of time during your life that they've actually been competitive enough to shave points.

Nice Dan Devine avatar......When he coached Mizzou...became the Pack coach where the sane cheese heads killed his dog! Had two backs at Missouri the Bears drafted Jim Harrison and Joe Moore.60 and sharp as a tack

Ding!

I googled "Ronnie Harmon Rose Bowl" and it's 95% that he threw the game and 5% that he just had an off game and no one can say for a fact that he threw the game.

Couldn't be more obvious.

Thanks, I appreciate that -- I was going to pm Packers fan Kirkwood to note Dan's time in Green Bay. I believe he coached Gary Barnett at Missouri, so there's a connection for Northwestern fans.

I'd heard the story about the dog many years ago, but never knew if it was apocryphal. Story has it that Dan was ND's leading choice after the 1963 season, but wasn't available and NU's Ara Parseghian got the job. When Devine finally got here in '75, the common saying was "Ara was fine, but Dan's divine." Parseghian had been pulling for his top assistant Tom Pagna to succeed him, but he had to tell Tom that ND was going with "an outside man."

Devine had a tough act to follow in Ara, but I'm glad ND saw fit to include him in their series of statues at ND Stadium as coach of the '77 Nat'l Champs.
