OK. So I've had a Harris Bank checking and saving account for about 7 years now. Free checking, and a few bucks in the saving account. I keep my bill money in the checking account. Throw the extra in the Saving account. So I find a $15 fee on my checking account register. Seems they "Upgraded" me to Gold checking. Awesome. A $15 monthly maintenance fee for checking accounts of less than $3000 a day. So if you have one day in which you dip under $3000... you get a monthly maintenance fee. Never mind what I have in my Saving account I guess. So... I'll be closing those accounts. Who has a suggestion for a bank that doesn't so shit like this? |

Chase for checking, Ally for savings. Simple. Better interest rate with Ally. |

Any credit unions in your area? |

Online savings accounts are the way to go if you actually want to accumulate some sort of interest on your money. Just find a place with free checking, and then just transfer money from the checking to the online savings account. It's simple and pretty quick. |

I have never been charged a fee for anything. My checking account even earns interest. Not much, but it does. Like Peoria Matt said, Credit Unions are good as well. Avoid Chase at all costs. |

I have a savings account through them to but it sucks. |

Darkside wrote: Chus wrote: Avoid Chase at all costs. Why? Wha happon? Yeah. I'd disagree with the "at all costs" thing. I think it depends on what your needs are. Been with Chase forever, no "upgrades" - never heard of that actually. But I know that there are minimums and other requirements, etc. We like Chase. Never had a problem. It sounds like you are not looking for something that will make you a few extra $ via interest rates, but something simple and stable. That sounds like a credit union to me. There are credit unions everywhere and they will probably welcome you with open arms. |

I've tried time and time again to find a small local bank where i could establish a personal relationship with a banker, but it seems like a business where very few people stay in the same job for very long, not to mention that the small banks are often bought out by the big guys. |

I know Harris sent around paperwork a few months back about changes to all accounts. I'll have to watch out for that. I am a former Household customer when it was bought out by Harris. |

I also bank with Harris and got the same notices that denisdman mentioned. I had two checking accounts with Harris, one for general checking and one that I used for my mortgage payment. I liked having them separate and at the time there were no additional fees. After I got the notice I was going to close my accounts at Harris shop around for another bank, but it seemed like a big pain in the ass so I just closed the extra account and stayed put. Will be interesting to see what else people suggest in the thread...maybe I will switch. I have to say that mobile check deposit is pretty damn cool. |

Mobile check deposit rocks. I went and looked into my account type. It says I need to maintain $1,000 to avoid fees. Like Darko, I tend to keep a low amount in there because it does not pay interest. Unlike him, I keep my excess cash and investments at Etrade. Now that my money market pays near zero, I don't even waste time transferring excess cash any more. |

It's going to be awesome when the banks start to overtly and officially charge consumers to hold their money. Not just minimum amounts or whatnot, but charge big bucks to grant you the right to deposit your money with them. |

crosscheck wrote: The worst thing that pnc has ever done t me is not give me interest on my checking account if I don't meet the minimum... Get used to it, it's only going to get worse. The banks are already saving/making (whichever you think about it) hundreds of billions per year on not having to pay any real interest to consumers on deposits due to Fed policy, now they need to put the government sanctioned squeeze on again. The bailouts didn't stop with TARP and such, they keep going and going and going. |

Been with Chase for over 10 years. No complaints. We have a joint checking account, and all of the wife's personal accounts through Baxter Credit Union. She's been with them since she started at Baxter, and they are open to the public as well. No monthly maintenance fees. There are a limited number of free ATM transactions, plus a ton of banks that they have agreements with for no ATM fee transactions anyway. They have a branch on site at Baxter in Round Lake off of 120 (like 10 minutes from the estates. Website is www.BCU.org |

I thought about leaving Harris, but the clearing of business checks in 24 hours was the reason I stayed. PNC was up to 72 hours to clear them. And DS, there are other plans you can take that charge less. It was all listed in the novella they sent out in September. |

I have been reading/hearing that due to monster banks and/or fed policies i.e. low interest rates the banks will charge even more. Instead of giving you something for having your money they will charge for convenience of using their "services". Don't get me started on the whole crack dealer strategy they used in introducing ATM cards. |

Despite its (sole) location being inconvenient to me, I stayed at Chesterfield Bank in Beverly for quite awhile since it was one of the few local banks who hadn't got bought out yet. But eventually they became Mid-America, then National City then.........PNC My dad was telling me about some big bank like Harris or Chase where he had a safe deposit box for years....one year they decided to raise the price by some ridiculous amount, it went from 25/yr to like 75/yr....he went in there to complain and they basically told him to fuck off. he went to some little polish owned bank down the street and got one for like 15$ |

also, kind of the opposite of what DS is saying...i went into PNC a few months back because i needed a cashier's check/MO....they tell me it's fucking 10$ for a cashier's check i couldn't believe it. i said you know i can go down the street to the grocery store and get a money order for like 75 cents ???? Teller goes hang on, i think you qualify for the next level checking....turns out I did, so she upgraded me, which then one perk was i got free cashier's checks. but i go, i'm eligible for this but you don't tell me until i complain about something else ? there was no way i was going to pay 10$ for a cashier's check but if i had, i'm guessing she never would have told me i was eligible to upgrade |
