This is a true story about my first year in the work force and corporate Christmas cards. I'm not sure, but I think Tad Queasy was working at the same company I was at around that time so he can confirm... would have been 1999 I believe. Anyhow, I worked there as a seasonal worker (office type job, did filing and typing) while I was in college, and I graduated with an IT degree... took a position in IT, and so my career was maybe five months old at that point. I took some time off at Christmas (what limited time I had) and when I got back there was an email requesting all those that didn't get their Christmas card to come down to so and so's office to pick them up. I'm thinking to myself that this really isn't worth the time; I'm sure it is nice to get a Christmas card, but whatever. Next Christmas season comes and there's no Christmas cards. As a company, they were really growing and probably increased about 50% over that period. A lot of the workers who had been there for a few years kept complaining how they stopped the Christmas cards and how they were sad that tradition had ended. At some point, I must have broached the subject with someone who was there... how is it this important to get a Christmas card from the CEO/VPs? I mean, it is nice they care enough to reach out to you, but really, are people saving these cards? Is this a cult? It was then that I found out the Christmas card wasn't even signed by the CEO or any of the upper executives, but they had included a crisp $100 bill tucked inside. |
