Phil has failed once Chicago fans again. Not only has his draft selections been suspect, for the 2nd year in a row the Bears were eliminated on the last day of the season. Last year Emery failed to fix the offensive line before the season and there was a gigantic collapse going down the stretch. Prior to this season he did little to improve the defense or get a new punter. He hired a coach that lost him three divisional games (Detroit at home (failing to play McCown), Minnesota on the road (failing to kick a less than 40 yard field goal to win the game) and Green Bay at home (team gave up a bogus touchdown by not playing to the whistle and the defense fell apart on 4th down and lost the game).

Phil nominated himself this week by overpaying for Cutler. He has improperly evaluated Cutler and repeatedly called him a "franchise quarterback." This season and maybe only this season, McCown was a statistically superior quarterback. McCown exhibited leadership that put the team in position to win every game he played in this season. With any kind of replacement level run defense the Bears win every game McCown played in. The argument is not that McCown is a better player over the course of his career or that he is more physically gifted than Cutler in terms of arm strength. But for the 2013 season McCown was more consistent with his play and showed that a quarterback that doesn't make mistakes is more important than a quarterback with the biggest arm. How many times did the offense stall with Cutler with a slow start to a game or a total collapse against Detroit and New Orleans? Cutler should not have been given 5 to 7 years because he is injury prone, he has only been to the playoffs once and won 1 playoff game in his career and he cannot beat Green Bay in the games that count. This season showed that a replacement level quarterback could run this offense better than Cutler.

Emery also deserves blame for Mel Tucker who was a bad hire (Why the need to run Lovie's defense?) and Joe DeCamillis whose special teams were also undisciplined and cost games (i.e. off sides on the onside kick againt Washington). I'm not willing to say that Lovie shouldn't have been fired but Rod Marinelli and Dave Toub are much better coaches than these two guys on the current staff.

Emery also deserves a nod for giving Tim Jennings a 4-year deal. He's got maybe two good years left.

I believe Phil is showing himself to suck but he will never be a yellow bellied, back stabbing sell out who will be forced to walk the earth for eternity wearing the shame of his actions

As a norm, one of the draw backs from any pro athlete signing "the big contract" is that their future performance rarely matches or exceeds any past success. Pujols, A-Rod, Romo, Flacco, Verlander, etc.

I'm sure there are exceptions but it sure seems that it always goes down hill after the big money is guaranteed.

Refute is a verb. Not a noun.

Guess those pro bowl rosters were picked in the pre season

Long makes the Pro Bowl being the second best guard on the team this year by just about every standard...meanwhile, either Floyd or Rhodes would have certainly moved the defensive revamping further along.

I think that Emery was correct with the Kyle Long pick.

For those who disagree, I give you Gabe and Chris to discuss.

It is both and absolutely used correctly in my sentence.

Does a Kyle Long pick make up for Shea McClellin?

Still too early to tell. If Long stays at guard then the pick is meh.

Maybe Cutler will prove to be the opposite? Mediocre player gets big money and then becomes great?

Yeah, probably not... :?

I was doing okay, but then Phil Emery sent me over the edge. Even the franchise tag at this point looks like a better move.

While you flood this thread with nonsensical lists, ask yourself this question: "Who will be around longer Cutler or Emery?"
