[url]http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local/illinois&id=9387794[url] January 9, 2014 (WASHINGTON, Ill.) (WLS) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied a request for aid to Washington, Illinois after deadly tornadoes swept the state in November. FEMA sent a letter to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency saying that infrastructure damage after the storms wasn't severe enough to warrant federal help. At least seven people were killed statewide and hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed. Washington, near Peoria, was severely damaged. Yeah, not enough destruction to rebuild a small town in your home state. Way to go guys. |

This should be on Mr Durbins desk. Mr Obama is busy getting bids on where his Library will be built. I will expect something on Stony Island, around 87th and it not just be a Library but a full service , NON RELIGIOUS, community service center that he is truely involved in. |

Is there a set standard for how much damage you had to have in order to qualify? |

The government has given a shit load of money to Illinois to help it recover from many storms over the past 3 or 4 years. If they said no this time I have to believe it wasn't enough damage for the Fed's to get involved. I had people at my door asking me if my home was damaged in any way by a storm in the past couple of years. |

And not to put too fine a point on this, if the petition for assistance was too based upon area infrastructure damage......exactly what infrastructure damage was there? The power lines are ComEds, the roads are clear, there's no water damage nor inability to quickly rebuild in tornado alley. It also doesn't sound as if the bastards from Allstate or State Farm are denying claims hand over fist like they did in other natural disasters so it would appear that the poor folks who suffered massive losses are being compensated. Where's the need for the feds to be the last resort....to protect corporate profits? So why did you change your spots here?!? |

If I heard correctly on the local news tonight (CBS) the amount requested was 6 million. Clearly there are statutes set out to determine who gets what if anything, but yeah if one wants to be willfully ignorant of context and just says "6 million? What the fuck; that's pocket change" I can see the outrage .... meaning it's irrational but not entirely hard to understand the reaction. Whoever is in charge of asking for the funds is, I'm sure, going to appeal. |

President Obama doesn't know the tornado's happened. He has yet to read about them like us regular folks have. |

Fucking dude sure as hell did not miss his Hawaii vacation yet you are not hearing a peep out of the media about that. |

Washington,Il is just sort of the face of the devastation. Yes I am. He went to the tornado strike a few years back. That though did not interfere with his vacation plans so it is okay. Frank, I still think there is something fishy about his childhood but as there is a birth cert I have to believe it. It is a done deal time to move on. |

6 killed in the Illinois tornados. By that standard he should be visiting Chicago every weekend. Over 1800 killed in Katrina; 15 million people impacted; the costliest hurricane in us history. There really is no comparison. |

Chas, I don't dislike you like some do. I disagree with you often, but I do believe you think things out more than, say, Scorehead. Just a word of advice... Google the word and then see if it's spelled right. I would say spell check it, but spell check won't likely catch a proper noun. You're welcome. |

Whoever is in charge of asking for the funds is, I'm sure, going to appeal. The preliminary damage assessment conducted jointly by federal and state emergency management agencies was $6.1 million in costs in nine counties affected by the storms, far short of the threshold for federal assistance in Illinois of $17.8 million, but an appeal could include costs that weren’t on the original application. It's funny how the Republicans in the West Wing get a reputation for barely being able to put together a cogent thought when they, time and time again, proved to be some of the smartest characters on the show. Nevermind the fact that the single dumbest character on that show was a Democrat. |
