I've been an AT&T customer for about 4 years now. Up until this weekend, I had a Samsung Galaxy S2, and was about 2 months away from my contract ending, and from me being able to do an upgrade to a new phone. There's a common problem with the S2, where the power button will sometimes stick, and force the phone into a rebooting loop, which won't stop unless the power button becomes unstuck. It would only happen to me a couple times a week, and wasn't a very big deal, and I could fix it in 10-15 seconds. Over the past two weeks though, the problem has gotten progressively worse, and my phone would just randomally reboot at any time, and the power button would stick for a very long time. It had become to the point where the phone was unusable. I went in to AT&T on Saturday thinking they would give me an early upgrade. I had the last phone for 1 year and 10 months, so it's not like I'm trying to get a new phone for no reason. Plus my phone is damaged, and I can't even use it. Turns out they wouldn't do anything for me. No upgrade. Their two options were 1. Use an old phone for a couple months (fuck no), or 2. Buy a new phone at full price and I could pay it off in installments on my bill. Their customer service solution was to raise my bill about $30 a month, so I could get a new phone or break out a Zack Morris phone for the next two months. I told them, "You realize that I'm just going to go to another carrier if you don't give me a new phone at the upgrade price today?" And they still chose to do nothing. So the wife and I then went across the street to T-Mobile. We got new phones, and they will pay our ETF fee, and our bill ended up dropping about $20/month. Die in a fire, AT&T! |

Fuck AT&T. My wife had a cheapie cell phone through her mother-in-law who works at AT&T. I got her an iPhone and added her to my family plan. Fuckers would not transfer her number. Can transfer the number over from any other bumble fuck cell phone provider, but can't do with one of their own numbers, idiots. |

Good for you. contracts are on the way out thanks to T-Mobile, and at&t hasn't caught up yet. Their latest solution was to throw 400$ at anyone who left T-Mobile to join them, apparently without realizing you still save money by sticking to T-Mobile and passing on the 400, and you're not in a contract either. |

No, this guy was a definite bro (not an Spmack bro either). Probably would have punched me if this wasn't a retail setting. |

The biggest thing T-Mobile did in my opinion was decouple the price of service from the cost of the phone, if you choose to buy one from them. Under their new price restructuring monthly costs dropped since phone subsidies were cancelled, and the price of the phone wasn't baked into the monthly service cost anymore. The idiots at att tried to duplicate T-Mobiles installment plans for phones without dropping the cost of the monthly plans, which meant you were arguably paying for your phone twice - through installments, and through the higher monthly cost which also accounted for the price of the phone, AND you were locked into them for two years. That's how I see it at least. |

What a lot of people don't understand is that prepaid phones are much cheaper than a plan. Cell phone companies have been dangling these expensive phones to get people sign up for plans. As long as you're not someone who breaks or loses your phone you can easily buy your own without signing up for a long-term plan. |

AT&T is fucking terrible. Had this issue (early upgrade) about 6 years ago. Same thing. Dead phone, and at that time, I was actually going to upgrade to a smart phone (blackberry) from my old flip phone. Not only did they choose to let me leave (keeping in mind that by getting the smart phone, I would be adding data, so they would be getting more money), they lost my wife at the time, and our internet as well (still had DSL). |

Yuup. Industry standard. Wife killed my Blackberry a few months ago and Sprint wouldn't work with me on reupping a contract a few months early. Glad I kept my old phone. I just had them switch me back to that but it sucked huge. Oh and the pricks hit me with an upgrade fee anyhow. Yeah. They refunded it once I asked them why I got hit with an upgrade fee downgrading to a phone I owned already but if you don't watch your bills they'll try to fuck you. |

I have a flip phone for 15 bucks from Walmart. I can't stand the phone and the last thing I want to do is spend time on it. |

Not to sound like a T-Mobile employee, which I'm not, but I think the company is the way to go if the service works for you. Before they killed contracts I was on a 30$ prepaid plan that had unlimited data and texts, with 200 something minutes included and ten cents per each minute in excess of 200. There was a similar plan that went limited on data but unlimited minutes and texting for thirty dollars. Now I get the unlimited minutes texting and 2gb data for around the same price, and I can leave anytime I want if something better pops up with having to pay an ETF, since there is no service contract. |

It's bad business for them to let customers out early, since most people are subsidizing their smartphones over the life of the contract. Just sort of how it is. I doubt there was much left if any in paying off an S2, but if they do it for you, then anyone with a real nice new phone that is actually subsidized will complain when they don't do it for them. |
