Nah your selection and prices and service are fine.
However you have massacred that Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah song and I can't take it any more.
For shame, Binnies. You rotten bastards.

The fact they filmed it during summer and playing it now makes it worse.

How would I know? I was told that stuff wasn't available after the first day, so I never bothered to check!

They got 2 shipments of it. Sold out the first day on the first and after a few days on the second (mainly cause nobody realized they got more)

I found some the other day, but I have plenty stashed so left it for RedskinGreg.

Their cashiers are douchebags. My partner and I used to get our Friday beer at the one on Dempster. My partner has an expired license (which probably makes him a douchebag himself), but he's over 30 fucking years old and looks every bit of it. When we went to check out the beer, they didn't want to take his expired license, so I said, "Okay, here's my license. I'll buy it." But that was a big fucking deal that required management approval. I guess you can't buy beer at Binny's if your underage kid is with you now. Anyway, fuck that, I've already got enough headaches in my life. Now we go to Sinicalypse Mart on Lincoln. They have a pretty good selection and they don't require ID from 50 year old men.

Yeah, this is insane.

I almost was denied buying beer at Mariano's a couple month's ago because my wife didn't have her ID. I asked what do they do when a parent comes in and buy's alcohol with their child present. They said, "Well, obviously they are not purchasing it for them". And they know this how?

This is one of the dumbest/short-sighted company policies I have ever seen at a store.

Yeah, it's a terrible policy because I don't even think the store has any exposure. They guy who bought the beer had ID. What he does with it when he leaves the store is on him. So really it's just an attack on the customer. And what does it get them? I don't go to Binny's anymore and i second their Douchebags on message boards.

As far as the expired ID is concerned, I can understand not accepting it to a degree. But for people who are older than thirty, it's kind of silly. I get that a 22 year old guy could give his old license to his 19 year old buddy who looks like him so he can try to sneak past a bouncer at a club with a quick moving line when it's dark and the dope is using a flashlight. But it's a brightly lit store and there's no doubt this drunken 30 year old idiot is the guy pictured on the ID. You're in business to sell beer, not to make buying it as difficult as possible.

oh that's right you named my convenience store after me. fucking shit i remember that day; IIRC it was a friday afternoon and i had no immediate responsibilities for the afternoon, so i was looking like hell warmed over (2+ days unshaven, wigger cargo shorts, and that pair of team jordans i never bothered to lace up after county so they act as my slippers) with glasses and the whole 9 yards so as i duck into my usual spot to grab a 40/32-of-corona-familiar and a shot, i hear "hey" and i look over and it's JORR and i'm like "oh fuck" cuz you know, believe it or not i have an image to maintain for this board and suffice to say JORR/partner/whoever got to see the nature of the beast.

so i try to be nice and cordial but i'm just thinking "get the fuck out of here before the subject of you looking like hyde to that of your usual dr. jekyll comes up" which i kind of did, so sorry if i was a dick that day JORR but i think you can vouch for the fact that i looked like i wasn't exactly looking for any sort of meaningful social interaction that day as i think i was just trying to get a beer to watch some baseball and rah rah rah.

that convenience store is good and solid.... the guys who own/run it have been cool enough in the past to extend me a $30 tab to the next day, but i don't ab/use that kind of privilege often. or ever again technically. now they've got some new jamoches who have already tried to hustle me by charging me $13 for the pack of cigarettes that i know costs $10.97 (and you feel like a dick correcting them but it's like "hey you're new here and i'm not. i know what this costs" and for some reason one of the new ladies always charges me $11.08 as opposed to $10.97, but yeah there's other little things that tend to have some variable pricing there, mainly the non-owners will charge an extra 50cents-1dollar for stuff to people who they figure they can get away with it with, but hey that's just technically oldschool in the art of bartering/etc.... you know, it's a CONVENIENCE store nestled in the heart of a residential district so sometimes they're going to see to it that you pay for that convenience, but it balances out by knowing if the main guys are there i can get a pack of buglers fronted to me for a few hours or whatever if i'm truly hurting, which truly puts the "convenience" in the "convenience store"

yeah the new guys really try to play that "ignorance" card where they start pretending to look up the price and then voila, it costs more than it really should cost. it's pretty damn clever on their part and you gotta give 'em their credit for doing it, cuz if they get somebody who's just passing through or whatever they're not gonna catch it and you're gonna pay 50cents-$3 more for the stuff than it really costs.

you know the one owner dude who's usually there in the morning? the guy with the glasses who often wears the red "hindu dot" (or at least that's what we called it growing up) with all of the gold rings on his hands? that guy is evidently some sort of a big deal in the hiearchy of his local church/equivalent and is a part of the management over there. i think it's out in park ridge or something and he told me about it years ago with the open invitation to come and check out the service (cuz i do wonder about religions of the world like that) but i never got around to it.

the other guy has glasses but no dot/bling and is a bit shorter with the dark hair, and he's good cuz he'll always round down and give me extra change and shit. those two make it obvious that they totally respect you as a "usual customer" and thus are the ones who know when i say "hey i gotta pick up my check later today so can you help out with some buglers for a few hours?" that i'll come back and etc. the new round of people who tend to be there afternoons/evenings.... yeah, even tho they've been there for a month or two now they're still pretending to look up the prices so it can magically show up as more expensive than it would be than the oldschool guys who know. go figure.

hell, that new lady actually tried going for the gold with me.... i got my $11.08 cigarettes (grumble grumble) and used one of those parliament $1 coupons and handed her $21.08 (cuz i forgot to subtract the $1 from the usual $11 so i'd get 10 back) and she gave me my dollar back and put the 20 in the drawer like "thank you" and i'm standing there like "uhhhh you know i gave you $20" and she looks back at me like "THANK YOU!" and i'm like "no that's not a tip ma'am, i should be getting $10 change back" and then i see the other new guy shoot her a look to which she gets smacked down and then starts going "OH SO SORRY SO SORRY I AM SO SORRY" before giving me my $10 back. i've been around long enough to have the guy at the BP do that to me (and it actually worked) so you gotta applaud their balls for trying it, but yeah, combine that with another cashier at a dunkin donuts trying the same thing with $5 change and an ATM machine that said it was giving me cash and didn't even open the cash door before 45 seconds passed and it said "WOULD YOU LIKE ANOTHER TRANSACTION?" and i think society as a whole is turning on me. i gotta be careful.

In the mid-90s, one of my college buddies did some housesitting for a U of C professor who lived on Blackstone a couple doors down from Sara Paretsky. Whenever I hung out with him, we would order a jug or two from Gill's and stumble around the neighborhood, inevitably finishing the night off at Cyril's House of Tiki. Most of the time we were the only white guys in the place, and the black guys there would frequently pretend like they were going to give us a hard time before buying us a round or just sitting down to talk. They seemed fascinated by white people who weren't afraid of them. Some of the older regulars were ex-Black Panthers who were very interested in what we were studying and what our politics were. It was very cool getting to know them.

Anyway, Gill's was some strange stuff. I'm not even sure it was beer. But it got you crazy drunk really quick. Their delivery guys never carded, which was a good thing since we were underaged.
