A college coach should never single out players after a loss. It's pathetic. I hope other coaches use this against him in the future. He said more, but I didn't catch all of it. Anyone who's listening to Bernstein right now might be able to fill us in. |

Anyone who's listening to Bernstein right now might be able to fill us in. Unless they are playing uncut audio, I wouldn't trust Bernstein on anything Coach K said... ...if he singled him out, yes, poor form. But I'd be interested to know if there was a question about how Jabari played that led to that comment. Also, saying someone played like a freshman is a pretty mild burn, no? |

I have heard that saying used a lot by coaches. |

Saying that a freshman star "played like a freshman today" is a coaches way of protecting his player. It reminds the world that he is a freshman, despite his successes. He didn't say he "sucked" or "cost us the game" or something similar. He's a pud, but not sure this is DB worthy. |

It's not the most insulting thing in the world, but regardless of context it makes K look really bad, IMO. Jabari wasn't being paid millions to win that game. The guy who was should take the blame. Especially considering his coaching of Jabari has been questioned all season. |

The guy who was should take the blame. Especially considering his coaching of Jabari has been questioned all season. No, context is pretty important here. If he just threw it out there that he played like a freshman, without any prompting, then sure, it's a dick move. But if someone asked him about how Jabari played (which I'm guessing someone in the press pool would have done), then I'd say it's a pretty normal thing for a coach to say about a freshman who didn't have a great game. |

Guess we just disagree. Coach K has no problem taking praise for wins, he needs to point the thumb when they lose to 14 and 15 seeds. |

He said, "When your best player is a freshman, sometimes he plays like a freshman." So he's saying our best player didn't come through in the clutch. It wasn't just some comment on a random freshman. He's saying our best player didn't get it done. |

Duke's combo of Coach K and Jabari Parker was good for exactly zero NCAA tournament wins By CHRIS CHASE 1 hour ago The best coach and the best player in college basketball weren’t enough to get Duke a single victory at the 2014 NCAA tournament. The 14th-seeded Mercer Bears stunned Mike Krzyzewski, Jabari Parker and the Duke Blue Devils on Friday, pulling a 78-71 shocker in a game played just down the road from Duke’s campus in Durham. Prior to 2012, Duke only had two opening-round losses in the previous 27 years. This opening-round loss is Duke’s second in the past three seasons. Parker, playing in his first, and presumably last, NCAA tournament game went 4-14 from the field. He wasn’t on the floor for key stretches of the second half because of foul trouble. Rodney Hood was even worse, shooting 2-10. Duke was 36% from the floor as a team. Defensively, the team was just as ineffective. Duke kept Mercer in the game throughout the second half by allowing open shots and getting beaten inside, then failed to come up with any late stops to swing momentum. Coach K has accomplished enough in his career to skate on any potential criticisms of the recent tournament woes. Four NCAA championships and two gold medals buy you that, at the very least. But this is a disturbing trend. Duke hasn’t made the Sweet 16 in four of the past eight tournaments. They’ve twice been the victim of the biggest upset of the opening round. There’s the 2010 title, of course, but recent titles won’t stop criticisms of John Calipari or Bill Self if they have early exits this year. Friday’s was as poor an effort as Duke has ever had under Coach K in an NCAA tournament. It also caps one of the most disappointing seasons under Krzyzewski. The word “underachieving” isn’t often used to describe any Duke team, but it’s fitting when discussing the 2013-14 squad. Even when the team played well — like in that classic up in Syracuse — it felt like the exception, not the rule. How could the best coach coaching the best player go so badly? |

He's the best coach when it's convenient for the narrative. Otherwise he's overrated. |

If Parker could average 20/9 for Duke in the ACC, I'm confident he could get 27/7 for the Bluejays. |

This is why he should have gone to Illinois. Winning the NIT would have helped his draft stock. |
