The guy who took the mascot's (Is he an official mascot?) head off deserved to get punched. Total dick move. This will give Bernstein at least two full shows. |

I take the side of Billy Cub because I support absurdity wherever it may lie. The mere concept of a guerrilla mascot (not a gorilla mascot) roving the neighborhood and shaking people down for tips is just totally batshit. Makes me laugh. What have the Cubs done since the Ricketts family came here? They've provided me no joy. Game, set, match, Billy Cub. |

I just watched it again. Did a second guy hit Billy Cub in the nuts or was it the same guy? Back to the first guy, if you do something to try and embarrass someone you don't know, don't be surprised if that person gets mad and slugs you. He seemed shocked that there was a guy in the costume who might not be all that amused at his wacky hijinks. |

Just so everyone is aware, one guy owns the costumes and he rents the costumes to others to make money. He does it as well, but I think there are 3 of them. Don't want to give one Billy The cub a bad name for the actions of another Billy The Cub |

It's one thing to entertain kids on the streets. These 3 "Billy The Cubs" actually walk into the Wrigley bars to entertain adult drunks? If I were the bar owners, I wouldn't allow him in. Quote: It turns out that old adage about not poking a bear rings true for cuddly mascot bears, too.
A YouTube video posted Saturday shows a man dressed as “Billy Cub,” an unofficial mascot of the Chicago Cubs, punching a patron in a bar after he removes the head of the costume. John Paul Weier, the man who has been playing the role of “Billy Cub” for the last six years, says the costumed man seen in the video is his brother, Patrick Weier who frequently fills the role. WATCH: Man Behind "Billy Cub" Mask Speak Out After Fight Weier says his brother was being harassed by the patron long before the video footage began. He said the man was punching his brother in the back, shoving him into the bar and continued to poke and hit him until his brother confronted the man. He said the man left, but came back shortly after and removed the costume’s head. “It’s obviously not good publicity. You never want anything like this to happen, but from what I’ve read online it seems like people understand that the guy was antagonizing [my brother],” Weier said. “It wasn’t something he was looking to do.” Renae Kondrat, who filmed the video, said two intoxicated men were antagonizing the mascot at Wrigleyville bar John Barleycorn. Kondrat and her friends were taking pictures with "Billy Cub" when the incident started. She said one man was taken out of the bar when he became too rowdy, but that a second man continued to tease the mascot before taking off his head. "A drunk guy threw himself into [Billy Cub] and I happened to have my camera so I started recording and it all happened real fast," she said. "I wasn't surprised. You're not supposed to take off the mascot's head, everybody knows that." This isn’t the first time a “Billy Cub” character has had issues with fans. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said the team has received complaints from fans before. “We have received complaints from fans, mistakenly believing ‘Billy Cub’ to be associated with the Cubs,” Green said in a statement. Green cited complaints that two years ago, a Billy Cub character swore at a patron and used an ethnic slur, because of an inadequate tip. On another occasion, a Cubs employee claimed to have witnessed a “prolonged verbal altercation” between Billy and another fan, again over the size of a tip. “This behavior is wholly inconsistent with the enjoyable fan experience we try to create at Wrigley Field,” Green said. Weier said the complaints mentioned by the team didn’t involve him, however, and noted that he has severed relations with the employee who was wearing the costume on those days. The Cubs and “Billy Cub” have battled over the mascot title for some time, until the Cubs unveiled an official mascot dubbed “Clark the Cub.” Citing allegations of trademark infringement, the League sent Weier a 100-plus page letter, ordering him to stop wearing the Billy Cub costume, and engaging in “unabated Mascot Activities.” "They can threaten legal action, it’s once they finally take legal action that’s kind of a different story," Weier said. "I’m willing and prepared to go to court and try to defend myself over what I’ve built over the last seven years." Weier says he has no intention of stopping his role as "Billy Cub." "We'll have a little mascot competition now," he said. "There hasn't been an official mascot yet, and now we've got an official mascot and an unofficial mascot. So, a little competition in Wrigleyville." |

I am OK with the guy doing whatever he wants, everyone else does on gameday, but if you want to walk into a bar, gonna need to see your ID! Take off the head. I still think it's funny seeing a guy in a bear costume punch someone. However, I can easily see the cubs point in this case, once again, not sure why the holdup on the lawsuit. Crane Kenny must have the key to the mens room! |

It was probably a very smart Cubs employee antagonizing Billy to try to get him bad publicity. |

bigfan wrote: yes, lots of people tip him to take pics with him. this makes me think of the time where i was switching to the redline at jackson and i encountered that silver "tron guy" on the platform. he was some goofy black dude who spraypainted everything he wore, including a giant funnel on his head, silver, along with painting himself silver. evidently he hung out down @ the jackson stop looking for people to take pictures with/of him, which cost $5. i was fiddling with my digital camera around one of the posts with mirrors on it (i was approximately 20-21 here, so i still had what would now be called a "selfie" fixation with myself being reflected off of various things) and the shithead came up to me looking perturbed. he broke character (as he's a robot/mime/something) to tell me that i owe him $5 for taking a picture of him. i told him that i didn't take a picture of him so sorry. he reiterated that i owe him $5 for taking a picture of him at which point *i* was a bit perturbed and returning his serve with what nicolas cage would call "verbal judo", blah blah blah, this eventually escalated into him screaming GIVE ME YOUR FUCKING CAMERA RIGHT NOW right in my face. i'm pretty sure this was the genesis of my line "you're about to have the first problem in a long succession of problems if you don't get the fuck out of my face right now" (go figure that a guy painted 100% silver would jump the fuck back when he was about to be touched) and finally either a cop waddled down to the platform or a train pulled up and he couldn't leave the gravy train, whatever.... the point is fuck this guy and by extension fuck the people who take this picture shit too seriously. and i went to washington to transfer from red/blue lines for about a year. can't lie. |

They should have him on with an "interpreter" to say "well, he's making an exaggerating shrugging motion to that question, Dan. Okay, now he has his hands on his hips with his head cocked, so I think you said something to upset him with that one." |

A few years ago I watched a couple of his henchmen harass a guy for allegedly taking his picture, to the point of making him go through his phone to prove he didn't. I used to see him routinely walking from the Cumberland Blue Line to the Park Ridge Dominick's. Never saw him working either of these spots. |

i think i forgot to mention that during our "verbal judo" throwdown i did take a picture of the guy and ask him "what the fuck are you going to do now?" --- yeah, i used to be a bit more righteous back in the day. but i mean, shit, i did what furious styles said they did to the guy (show him the pictures i took of myself on the viewfinder) but it was the whole GIVE ME YOUR CAMERA thing that was the breaking point. that motherfucker wasn't getting my camera. aceyalone wrote: dealin with the whoopty-woo you're bound to get caught up
