An Alabama teen is being criticized for posting on Twitter a selfie taken at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, according to the Washington Post. The photo, seen above, was posted to Twitter on June 20 by Breanna Mitchell and shows the teenager smiling. It was accompanied by the caption, 'selfie in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp,' and a smiley emoji. The image sparked massive Internet backlash with some going so far as to threaten Mitchell's life.

In the wake of the uproar, Mitchell has spoken out about the controversial photo, saying that she has no regrets and wouldn't do anything differently.

Mitchell, a recent high school graduate, traveled to Europe in June and visited the camp in Germany on the last day of her trip, the Washington Post reported.

Over the ensuing month, the tweet has amassed more than 4,000 retweets and 2,600 favorites, according to the New York Post. In response to the media attention after her initial tweet, Mitchell tweeted, 'Over 150 retweets. Turnnnnnn uppppppp' and 'I'm famous y'all.'

The tour guides even tell you to be respectful and not to pose for pictures there. Though this moron doesn't surprise me. I saw similar things on our tour.

I don't think she gets it. Social media and iphones are turning most people into idiots if they aren't already. When we went to Pearl Harbor there was a group of tourists, I felt, were not displaying the proper amount of respect. I do hate that she is sticking by her guns here saying what she did was fine but that might be part of her generation. Everything they do is "fine".

redskingreg, if you ever want to share your experience, I'd love to hear it. I don't think I could go, I started bawling at the New England Holocaust Memorial .

I've been to Dachau. Tons of douchebag teens taking smiling photos at the gates. Made me sick.

Also made me sick that people live literally right next to the camp. How could you live with that in your back yard?

The tour was gut wrenching and the lack of understanding of the youths made it worse. However, it was definitely a moving experience and something everyone should do if they can, IMO.

Went to Buchewald camp a couple years back. One of the most humbling experiences of my life. Cannot imagine a selfie there. People have no respect for anything any more

She's 18 (even though she looks 30) so this really shouldn't be a big deal. She isn't the first 18 year old to do something stupid and act as if nothing was wrong with it.

But when she turns 30, 40, or 50 I don't have the confidence that she will realize the 18 year old was wrong.

From what I read she seems like a smart kid that's really into history. She'll figure it out. Even if she does believe the selfie was a tribute to her father.

This would maybe be true if her father was Hitler. That would make sense. Hitler was evil but, to my knowledge, was not a hayseed.

Otherwise, she is a moron who is dishonoring the thousands of innocents who were subjected to incomprehensible horrors in that camp. What a fool.
