1. There are 4 games scheduled for Friday, including one that starts at 11am. On, you know, a day when most people are working
2. There are only 2 games scheduled for Saturday & Sunday, i.e. days when most people are not working
3. Whats up with these weird start times, 4:37pm, 8:37pm, 2:45pm, 6:37pm ?? How the hell am I supposed to remember that ?

yeah, old man yells at cloud but you know ...

Even more troubling is the TV lineup. You pretty much have to work to find what station each game is on...but hey, those stations paid lots of money so Bud is a great commissioner despite no one paying attention

A's/Royals took me the 5th try to find the game.

FOX nope, ESPN nope, ESPN2 nope, FOX Sports 1 nope....waste 5 minutes googling....ah TBS.

MLB tries their hardest to not be watched.

Yeah, that schedule is wacky. I would love a quadruple header on weekends like the NBA does.

It could be done better. Maybe the next commissioner will fix it

Post subject:  Re: MLB playoff scheduling

why stop with the playoffs? what is this "getaway day" crap all season long with games ranging from 11:35am-2:40pm CDT all across the country? it's not like baseball is some "national pastime" where people will take days off of work/play-hookey to go to day games or even when the playoffs start you can go to a bar on a friday and literally be able to watch playoff baseball ALL FUCKING DAY.... it's not like this was ever a society where kids in school used to watch the world series on TV or at least listen to it on radio or be acutely aware of it AS IT HAPPENED DURING THE FUCKING DAYTIME HOURS.

learn from the NFL. you put the games on thursday nights, sunday afternoons, and monday nights. i.e. when most people aren't working. its one thing to say "FUCK OFF GOD I GOTTA GO DOWN TO SOLDIER FIELD!!1!" but it's morally reprehensible to say "FUCK YOU WORK I GOTTA WATCH MY PLAYOFF BASEBALL!"

Getaway day is the result of decreasing double-headers. Without double-headers there are fewer off days in the season, as a compromise the players negotiated getaway days when on road trips and having to travel. The lack of double-headers hurt the people operating the concession stands while giving the owners additional days of televised games, and for players gives many only 2 non-baseball days a month.

I don't understand why they can't play a World Series game on a Saturday afternoon. Are they runnin' scared from college footbaw?

take it from an american with a danny welbeck statue as his avatar (the inference being that i watch soccer circa 2pm on weekdays) but i fucking love getaway days. i love that there's baseball on so with my trusty mlb.tv/apps i'm ready to roll out either audio/video of "the national pastime" pretty much all day long ~2 days per week b4 i've got shit to do. i'm really looking forward to tomorrow when starting at 11am or whatever i've got playoff baseball all day long.

and hatchetman has a definite point. nobody competes with the NFL, and baseball would rather shoot its wad on a friday because by not loading up on even a saturday it acknowledges that people like football (college or NFL) better than baseball and baseball would be best served to fill up otherwise-empty-time with early programming that gets people hooked in early. if you like what you see at noon on friday you can tune in to watch game 2 on saturday/sunday whatever. cromulent scheduling IMO.

Why would they air the games against football? They want people to watch.

World Series games have fewer viewers than MNF games involving two dog teams.

I saw somewhere that the Royals-A's game would have been the 7th most watched college football game of the year and the college football season is only a month old.

so if your argument is that they'd be crushed in the ratings by pretty much any sport other than badminton, why not just air them at a normal time so at least people who are already fans can watch ? might as well get a 0.3 rating instead of a 0.2
i understand they can't compete with the NFL, but i don't think the answer is to air games at 11am on a Friday, i doubt you're going to gain any kind of new audience that way.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I will watch both. I was just listing a reason why they won't air the games on Saturday.

It seems like they are trying to create a situation like March Madness where people watch all day.

Outside of moving the playoffs to August I don't think there is much that they can do.

NCAA and NFL are both all-day, so you really can't piggy-back

but at least if you go (somewhat) head to head, you stand the chance that some people will tune in during commercial breaks, halftime, football game is a blowout, etc.

you've already got people sitting down to watch sports. you're half way there. at 11am on friday i don't think susie homemaker is turning off the Price is RIght

nah at 11am on friday susie homemaker is prolly turning on her weed dealer (in the biblical sense). it's called "wife patrol" as far as i know; i stumbled upon it by accident a few years ago when i was walking through lincoln park circa lunchtime and noticed all these good looking obviously-bored-as-shit trophy/ish wives out there in the public park space strutting and mugging and whatnot, it dawned on me that there's prolly a whole underworld of action going on while the well-paid husband is at work (boning his secretary/jumpoff/whatever on a cigarette break or what have you)

i shared this thought with my weed dealer that afternoon and he was like "oh yeah, that's wife patrol dude" and i was like "ok then" and now i have to play 2pac's life goes on for some reason.

Going back to starting the playoffs on Tuesday, so you get 4 days of not much football

Maybe. But watching Joba Chamberlain fold again :D whilst sitting in my office halfway working, this is one of the few afternoons I actually wanted to have my tv on.

But then again, I still enjoy reading actual books from brick & mortar bookstores or talking vs. texting people. What can I say, I'm old and perhaps stuck in my ways. :alien:
