Austere, cold, rigid buildings were invented in Chicago.

 You should have stolen his thunder.

I'm not sure whether I like the preliminary concept for that Lucas Museum or not. One thing I'll say is that some of the most beloved buildings were once maligned.

Will Burns is further proof that there are too many wards (& aldermen) in the city.

I kind of like the building but not at that location.

They knew Friends of the Park people would be pissed no matter what. Draw something that is transparent with less density.

And some of the more maligned today were once lauded and praised.

 Was this one originally praised? I'm not sure how I feel about it. It seems a bit odd in its surroundings. And the salmon and Cubbie blue panels are kind of ugly. I don't know why Jahn didn't make them some kind of neutral-colored glass. But the atrium is pretty striking, modern but evocative of older styles. If this building was once lauded, I think people may come full circle. If it doesn't fall apart first.

Not that I agree with everything he writes but this recent column stuck in my head.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/ct-thompson-center-kamin-met-0814-20140813-column.html#page=1

If our buildings reflect us as truly as a mirror, as the architect Louis Sullivan once said, the image emanating from Chicago's run-down James R. Thompson Center speaks with painful honesty about the sad state of the state of Illinois.

Our public buildings are supposed to be proud symbols. But this one — with paint chipped off its rusted exterior columns, faded carpets held together with duct tape and graffiti marring its once-glistening Jean Dubuffet sculpture — represents not the majesty of the state but the poverty of its coffers.

Today's debilitating state budget crisis was on no one's radar when architect Helmut Jahn's postmodern glitter palace opened nearly 30 years ago. Whatever one thought of the building's spaceshiplike wedge of glass and vertigo-inducing atrium, it was impossible to deny its ambition.

The images I've seen of the Lucas museum evoke a reaction that is similar both to the Thompson Center and the Soldier Field renovation. If considered "bold" I find them to both be incongruent with their surroundings, dated, and eventually their upkeep cost conspicuous. Also, the color scheme for the Lucas has me wondering how it will look over time as it fades.

I worked in the Thompson building when I was in school. It felt like working in a endless hallway

I don't think that's terrible at all. The thing that makes it stupid is that they insisted on leaving the columns up. And then lost the landmark status anyway.

Sounds like the backdrop for a Sartre play.

I'd say it's more Kafka. The airplane attire thread is a Sartre play.
