I'm Jim Gray with a CBS Sports Minute. On 9/11, we were not in heaven, indeed, it was hell on earth as the Twin Towers were two: structurally compromised to stand, and the Pentagon was a five: alarm fire. In the wake of the disaster, we thought we were asleep, and that we would escape this nightmare. But that was not the case, and the case was not brief, as the suffering went on for days and weeks, if not months and years. But soon, we would be let to eat cake, as there was a Marie for our calendar of misery: it is that to which I refer, of course, is sports. The intercourse of baseball brought us together as it had previously pulled us apart, and we came to realize our love for each other. Though the Yankees were unable to avenge 9/11 in the World Series, they reminded us how to wear a shirt, a slogan, and a sentiment: I Love New York.

The only reason I knew 9/11 happened was that I turned on ESPN to watch a Champions League soccer game and the news was on instead. Otherwise I would have just kept playing NCAA 01 on PS2 all day. Thanks sports for helping me remember!

It wasn't the most popular decision for the sports world, but it was the right thing looking back, especially given all the mourning and grieving that entire week following the terrorist attacks.
