Not quite... Tom The question was "Does my forced air furnace dry the air?" Quote: Dear Kent, Home energy specialist Michael Lamb says, "The popular belief that a forced-air heating system dries the air in a house is misleading. This condition can occur in any house, regardless of the type of heating system." Relative humidity in a house falls when dry outside air is drawn into the building and then heated. Houses should be airtight, with heating systems that minimize inside/outside air exchange. "A big cause of 'dry house' is improper ductwork design and installation. Air flow through return and supply ducts must be balanced. If not, air pressure differs between rooms. Higher-pressure rooms force warm moist air out; lower-pressure rooms suck outside air in." Contact a heating specialist to diagnose your situation. If your home was airtight you'd die eventually. Or get sick building syndrome. There was a time when we thought buildings needed to be as tight as possible. That's not quite true. You need several air changes per hour to maintain a healthy building. I'm not a building science specialist but most homes don't have much of a pressure difference room to room. THe most I've ever observed was something like 10-15 pascals. Not a particularly big difference. Tall buildings over 3-4 stories may experience some stack effect but that's rarely a result of improper ductwork design. I think ductwork is more in Chus's wheelhouse so maybe he knows more. |

Denied. Skilling wasn't the one who answered the question, as if I would even want him to be the one who answered HVAC questions. |

Well I thought he was cause he had the quotes from the specialist. He had one a few months ago when he said that you should set your humidifier to approx. half the indoor temperature, ie. you like it 70 set the humidistat to 35, which I would disagree with because it depends on the outdoor temperature. |

I just remembered that story after 9-11 about that family that plastic and duct taped their windows and doors and shit to air tighten their house and someone died. I think I remember that. But I was... ah, different then, so I may have imagined that but I thought there was a story about that. Ish. |

If we are expecting big snow, Skilling always predicts another inch or two than everybody else. If it's bitterly cold, he will predict just a little colder than everybody else. If it's August, he will predict 103 instead of 100. He knows exactly what he's doing. |

He seems to know his stuff and the science behind everything in the forecast. He's not just out there reading a script like most weather people on other stations. Good for him if he's pulling down 2 million/Year. |

darkslice is right in that homes should have a good deal of air exchange per hour in order to have similar quality to outside air. the problem is way too much heat loss occurs, so most homes are tight enough these days that the air quality is crap. the best bet is a heat exchanger to bring in cold outside air so heat loss is minimized. |

Bruce Rauner waived his salary for this year. I believe he is worth about that much. |
