What a pussy nickname. No wonder they never win anything. The only think that could be worse would be if their colors were a hideous blue and red. |

It just doesnt seem to be used in a positive sense much, in my experience. |

if you think about it "cubbies" is the ideal word to come after "WOOOO" but yeah anyone who unironically uses cubbies around me is about as dead to me as someone who wears crocs. |

He's busy telling catchers where they can and where they can't line up on a throw home. |

Just to throw this out there, but didn't Harry Caray (who caused us to this day to now have guest conductors during the 7th inning stretch in his memory) use the term "Cubbies" instead of "home team" while leading "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"? |

If a song is being sung and we need an extra syllable, Ill allow it. |

While this is generally regarded as fact, Harry, a well known devotee of modernist painting, and owner of several prized Jean Metzinger oils, actually was singing "root, root, root for the Cubists." |

I understand that the pelican is the state bird of Louisiana, but Pelicans is an odd name for a professional sports team, IMO. "Pelican" is just a weird word (and a weird bird) anyway. Pelican Pelican Pelican At least it's unique, though, and they didn't go with a cat-themed nickname. |

It doesn't flow. You can't really abbreviate it well, either. "Pels" sounds weirder, probably because that L sound just flows right into the S. At least "Bulls" has a...deeper?...vowel sound. They should have stuck with Hornets because of how good it sounds in a Louisiana accent. Hooawnets. Also, there wouldn't be this wacky-ass cut-and-paste franchise lineage where the Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte Bobcats are the same team that took a nap, while the New Orleans Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans are also a franchise. At least when the NFL did it with the Browns, they said from the beginning that the Ravens were a new team. The NBA just sort of made this up as they went along. |

Are they really going to rename the Wizards the Washington Monuments? Joe House on Simmons podcast said they might've been able to go back to Washington Bullets but Gilbert Arenas shot that down. |

Wouldn't be surprised. The holding company for the Caps/Wizards/arena is called Monumental Sports or something, and the new logo is just the Washington Monument on a basketball. Just go back to the Bullets. It's clear that's what they want to do; they're dressed up like the Bullets except for the jerseys saying "wizards" instead. |

I always liked the Bullets' old uniforms and logo and thought their reason for changing the name to the Wizards was pretty weak. I don't think anyone was going about their life as a law-abiding citizen and then decided to turn to a life of crime and gun violence because the local basketball team was named the "bullets." They wanted to generate interest in the team and make money selling new merchandise, not because they thought it was inappropriate or would cure societal ills. |

That no one could get the story straight on whether it was gang violence or Yitzhak Rabin's assassination that prompted the change pretty much shows that it was just about selling more merchandise. Remember that they made the switch at a time when NBA uniforms were a fever dream of pseudo-aggressive cartoons and weird bright colors: the purple/sky blue/green/copper Utah Jazz, the Pistons and their teal flying tailpipe-horse, the fiesta Spurs, the Rockets, Raptors, Vancouver Grizzlies, and the Charlotte Hornets, the original gangstas of the '90s NBA aesthetic. The Bullets were just red and blue with the word "bullets" and they sucked. Of course no one bought that. |

There were a lot of bad uniforms at that time, but those Pistons and Raptors uniforms in particular were horrifying. It it weren't for Jurassic Park, would their even be a team called the Raptors? |
