Bud Norris believes if a non-American baseball player is going to play in the major leagues and earn "American dollars," he needs to respect the nation's pastime and cut out showboating antics.

The Padres pitcher's remarks were in response to a USA TODAY Sports study that revealed a large majority of bench-clearing incidents in MLB — 87% of 67 incidents over the past five seasons — involved players of different backgrounds.

White Americans make up about 60-65% of the sport, the report said.

Confrontations often result from a batter being plunked or showboating.

“This is America’s game. This is America’s pastime, and over the last 10-15 years we’ve seen a very big world influence in this game, which we as a union and as players appreciate," Norris told USA TODAY Sports. "We’re opening this game to everyone that can play. However, if you’re going to come into our country and make our American dollars, you need to respect a game that has been here for over a hundred years, and I think sometimes that can be misconstrued. There are some players that have antics, that have done things over the years that we don’t necessarily agree with.

“I understand you want to say it’s a cultural thing or an upbringing thing. But by the time you get to the big leagues, you better have a pretty good understanding of what this league is and how long it’s been around."

The righthander said one of the biggest violators of disrespecting opponents is Dominican native Carlos Gomez. Norris praised the Astros outfielder's ability, but isn't a fan of his on-field behavior.

Gomez, often adored by teammates but not loved by opponents, has reportedly been involved in four dugout-clearing fights over the past three seasons. He said, however, he isn't trying to irritate other players.

“Why can a pitcher show you his emotions and you can’t show yours to him? Those are baseball rules from a different time," Gomez said to USA TODAY Sports in Spanish. “It gets to the point where, when you’re by yourself, you think, ‘What did I do? I didn’t do anything inappropriate.’ It’s a bit frustrating, because all I’ve ever done is play the game with passion, with desire, with love, giving it my all, and a lot of people take it the wrong way."

Do you have a list?

I drafted Norris in every league for what seemed like a decade because I thought he would be a stud.

Moving past a horrible attempt to argue semantics of a word used properly .... listen to the fella that was just on. It clears up the whole case/discussion/issue/topic now and forever in about 10 minutes' time.

he said the first latino player in MLB showed up in 1887 or something and they wrote about his "flashy cuban ways" or something, denoting that it's a cultural thing that has technically been a part of baseball going all the way back to 1887 or whatever.

Seems to me he has a point here. You hear about hitters getting shit for this way more than pitchers.

that guy is a writer/humorist who had a cup of coffee in the majors and now considers himself the moral arbiter of everything that is wrong with baseball.

He's got a couple of valid points the most pertinent of which is the poor(ish) relations between American and Latin players. Not surprising if you know human nature. They can't even speak the same language. The fact that a company can bring a foreign person over here to work for years and not provide extensive language training is crazy.

However, the fact is that baseball's archaic racist unwritten rules have resulted in an astonishing level of player safety that boggles the mind considering the thousands of players and millions of pitches thrown. Only ONE guy killed (like 80 years ago) and a handful seriously hurt.

I will do my best not to kill you as long as you don't act like a buffoon when I fail which may fray my fragile ego at best and highlight my ineptitude at worst.

It's not that hard. I'm sure you can resist doing jumping jacks for 20 seconds until you get back to the dugout.

I get where both sides are coming from. I'm fine with Norris' opinion as long as he doesn't go into McCann territory. I prefer the wacky antics and emotion though. Makes the game more fun for me.
