He was Manager of the Year in 2014. He became bad this season.

Obviously. He just didn't get any players. He had great players last year. TERRIBLE players this year. A complete change of players. For the worst.

Players that didn't play as well. It happens. Far more often than managers being lobotomized.

So is the argument here that Matt Williams is the reason the Nats sucked this year or that the players played worse which is also his fault?

Williams lost the team. They didn't play hard for him because they didn't respect him.

Reading more on the Williams deal with Nationals it seems him winnig MOtY was out-of-town stupid. He made many tactical errors but was bailed out due to having superior talent. Fast forward to 2015 where injuries plagued the Nationals and he couldn't rely on having 9 better guys than the opponent every game.

They did play hard for him. The effort was there but the talent wasn't.

And yet, many of those "untalented" guys have had better seasons under other managers.

Williams had issues with his coaching staff who weren't his guys. I don't disagree that he "lost" his team, but I don't think that makes him a "bad" manager, it's just a bad situation. It certainly isn't fair to credit the players when things are good and then blame the manager when things are bad, but that's just the way it usually goes. Although it seems plenty of people are crediting Maddon for the hitting of Rizzo and Bryant and the pitching of Arrieta.

He created the bad situation by going after Bryce Harper. He thought he would be the big tough guy manager by putting the most talented player in baseball in his place and it back fired. The players backed Harper and not the coach.

i thought we could DB the natinals for essentially pulling a silence of the lambs and making an "expo suit" out of the skins/remains of the montreal expos and then parading around like they're such a pretty lil baseball team: #ZombieBaseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you say #NATITUDE, i say #EXPOCIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trading for him was the real problem. Sure, there were issues with Williams' communication, but the team was really lost when the front office demoted Storen. One of the beat writers wrote a great comprehensive story about the downfall of the 2015 Nationals. The players were pissed about Storen losing the closer job as well as the front office's unwillingness to pay the homegrown players when their time came while bringing in Papelbon and $11 million for next season. The players talked about all the "Nationals Way" stuff that they bought into, but then management has no problem letting the "Way" guys walk and replacing them with outsiders unfamiliar with the "Way".

That's something Theo has to guard against and an inherent problem with establishing a "Way". Fortunately for Cub fans, I think Theo is smarter than Mike Rizzo.

if there ever was an argument for managers being important to teams, this team would be a good example. The Nats were done before Papelidiot joined up.

That's not true. They were starting to roll. That's why they thought they needed a closer. They were 10 over on July 17, their highwater mark for the season. Papelbon came about a week or so later. They were spooked about Storen's previous meltdowns in big spots. And it wasn't Papelbon specifically that angered the team, it was that they demoted Storen.
