Nope. It was dirty. About time to enforce this crap

He'll appeal and not serve a game until next year.

What an idiotic suspension.

That type of slide is common. The suspension was only levied due to the national exposure and the 2B being an idiot by having his back turned and helicoptering.

A farce

This part is true, but the tragedy is that, if it was illegal, why wasn't it enforced during the fucking game?

There is a new emphasis on the "neighborhood play" ever since replay came around.
This penalty is almost REQUIRED because of MLB's stance on the neighborhood play.

Actually, forget all of that. Utley is a notorious raging DB. Suspend hm for any reason. Hell, make one up.

Takeout slides are common. Slides that do not even start until the runner has past the bag are not.

That play, and the ensuing replay, was a gigantic cluster

Because it's not an illegal slide is my guess.

It's one of those "oh shit, New York is mad! We gotta do something!"

According to screen shots I saw on Twitter, it was illegal... the rule just isn't enforced. But who knows... it's Twitter.

From an ABC article:

"A comment in the Official Baseball Rules to Rule 5.09 (a) (13) says umpires could have called an inning-ending double play if they decided Utley had gone outside the baseline and interfered with Tejada fielding the throw.

"The objective of this rule is to penalize the offensive team for deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base," the comment says. "Obviously this is an umpire's judgment play."

A 2-game suspension is not warranted.

He slid when he got to the base.

He was close to the bag.

He's a douchebag, but the slide wasn't illegal.

When if ever has a player been suspended for a "dirty" slide to 2nd?

If you intentionally throw at a batter, charge the mound, bump an umpire, throw a punch, bang on the opponents clubhouse door, etc you know you'll likely face a suspension.

There is literally not one instance I can think of a slide earning a suspension.

So, we'll start now?

Insanity.

He slid when he was closer to left center than the bag.

His hand literally passed right over the bag.

what gets me is why would you as a receiver of the throw, turn your back to the player coming at you? It's just asking for it...

Post subject:  Re: MLB/Joe Torre

If that's legal (and I don't know the letter of the rule), they need to change the rule. It's dumb. Eliminate any ambiguity regarding the neighborhood play (eliminate it) and then force runners to go to the bag, specifically. I realize it's only being talked about now due to the stage and the effect it had on a huge game, but that's how most things get changed.

If he slid before passing the bag over his hand wouldn't have gone over it now would it?

It was dirty as hell.

What?
He was already turning that way because of the throw. You think it's easier to stop/turn back the other way?

The blimp passed over second base too... doesn't mean it tried to slide into it
