We do program at church during the school year and one of the events is a pinewood derby. rules are about the same as cubscouts but a bit different with more leeway for this or that. of course the people helping the person in charge are all den leaders or whatever who overanalyze everything. I helped check in cars last night and will continue tonight. sorry, i just don't care enough to tell the kid who's car only weights 2 oz less than its able to weigh has used illegal wheel lube. its not going to win or even barely make it down the track. these guys kids cars look like they were ordered off the internet. your kid can barely tie his shoes but his car has a showroom finish? |

I thought this thread was going to be about a Police Department in a town called Pinewood Derby. |

I think when I entered my car in the pinewood derby 312 years ago, I was the only kid who worked on it from start to finish by himself. Everyone else showed up with pinstripped, flames, aerodynamic fins, front weighted, pointed nose cone fronts.... Mine made it down the first 8 feet then we called Carz for Kidz! |

I hate pinewood derby. I suck at building them. I hate going into the entry room and being embarrassed for having a car that doesn't fit dimensions and weights. I hate not being able to retrofit it on the fly. The one thing I don't really hate is the car finishing last just about every year. I'm cool with that. I've won safest car trophies |

Same scenario here back when my kids were that age, the boys' group had very strict rules (NO wheel alterations, no mid-race lubes, etc), but the girls' were pretty much whatever you wanted. Funny to see the Dad who had spent hours turning the wheels to a razor thin and formed the body on the CNC machine at work hovering whilst his daughter was playing Polly Pockets with the other girls... |

Hate this time of year! Mr spaulding makes the rough cuts but the kids have to sand, paint, and whatever to it. Sometimes they'll stress about the performance or look of it the day of and we tell them you should have Mr So and so build yours next year like he built his kid's. Parents do too much, it won't help in the long run. My son mostly wanted car looking ones but did a ice hockey rink one that was pretty good one year. I think he got something for it. My daughter has done a minion beach and campout looking one. Was completely disappointed it didn't win for creativity, the kid that won was was totally a dad job. We told her to work harder next year and are hoping it works. |

I have to admit, we're doing our first one Fri. night. I nearly lost a fingertip polishing axles with a Dremel tonight. |

There are a lot of activities the scouts do on their own with parents their to only to observe and prevent. I don't think Pinewood Derby is or has ever been one of these things. I have a family tradition of sucking at it as my dad was horrible at helping me build as well. Overall, scouting is a good thing. Don't throw away the baby with the bath water. |

For future pinewood derbyists: Chop off a piece of the back so that each axel is the same distance from the end. Drill a 1" hole dead center Put quarters in the hole until you get up to the maximum weight. Then do all your other stuff.....axel polishing, graphite powder.... |

Mine made it down the first 8 feet then we called Carz for Kidz! yea when I did this for the cub scouts 773 years ago there was one kid who's dad owned some sort of factory and I'm pretty sure that kid's car broke the track record and later had a blue book value of $32,999.99. My car didn't even make it all the way down the incline. I made such a bad car it broke the laws of gravity. |
