Also known as "Stat Geek Christmas"

Insufferable pricks everywhere creaming their pants over computer projections.

Awful. Just fucking awful.

Actually, this may be the only thing worse than Fantasy Football Draft Conventions...

No proof they are even worth paying attention to either.

They've done pretty well with the White Sox:

2014 Pecota: 75-87
2014 Actual: 73-89

2015 Pecota: 78-84
2015 Actual: 76-86

What about before 2014?

Pretty far off on the Cubs though.

I know. The Cubs are exceeding everyone's expectations.

I'm a neutral observer and I have to say that the Cubs are quite an impressive squad this year and it would be pretty embarrassing to blow it.

What about before 2014?

Pecota has been about 50-50 with the Sox over the past 10 years. Sox are the worst they have predicted, ongoing battle between the Pecota guys and Kenny.

Pecota #112 on Sox list

Pecota has acknowledge time and time again their lack of consistancy with Sox records, they chalk it up to the Sox taking fliers on so many players, which even a Sox fan cant really argue with ...its what they do. They shop in the clearance aisle, looking to see if they can find a nice $5 shirt that sold for $50 2 years ago....and if it fits...congrats.

I just find the response of some in the Sox front office funny when they are even asked about it, like the Pecota guys change the numbers to give the Sox a bad prediction. Its just a number, based on other numbers, really nothing more. Its no PERSONS opinion. Yet, it upsets some.

but its not just a number. It is an equation that they are proffering as a predictor. However, when it is shown to be bad at predicting, they do not alter the equation. They have given many possible reasons they consider the Sox an anomaly above and beyond what you have written, including such things as a an unusually low amount of games missed and a GM who makes bold moves at the trading deadline

They do alter the number though. PECOTA being used now is not the same as when it started. But the people who rely upon it do so in the exactly same way in spite of the various iterations.
