By conference standings:

(2) St. Louis
(3) Chicago

(6) Tampa Bay
(8) Detroit

(5) Anaheim
(6) San Jose

(2) Pittsburgh
(4) New York

I know it's important to save on jet fuel because NHL teams are poor, but the 6th-place team in the East shouldn't get the weakest possible opponent.

The NHL actually seeded the Stanley Cup 1 through 16 during the Islanders' dynasty, if you can believe it. They played the Flyers in the Final once.

I'm guessing Detroit's favored over the Lightning in that series, once Vegas releases betting lines.

Stamkos, Tampa's leading scorer and best all-around player, is out and they split the season series. Red Wings are the original/ultimate "save it for the playoffs" team.

Tyler Johnson got injured vs the Habs the other night,

Johnson wasn't the same player in the SCF last year after teams started running him into the boards every chance they could.

I don't think the Wings are saving much of anything this year. They're just not as good as they used to be. Larkin and Athanasiou are really impressive, sure, but they and the Flyers are the only two teams underwater in scoring (-10, -2, resp.). Even the zero-fuck-giving Blackhawks finished at +27.

Granted, they still might beat a Bolts team with no Stamkos, no Stralman, and maybe no Tyler Johnson. Point is, that series is gonna be a suckfest.

The hockey world really turned on Steve Yzerman overnight. Let the record shoooowwww I was an early adopter of not thinking Steve Yzerman was all that great.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/big- ... contender/

Quote:
When Yzerman hung up his skates and moved into the role of vice-president of the Detroit Red Wings in 2006, he made it sound like an internship. “For me, initially, it’s going to be almost an education in how the business works and the management side of running a team,” Yzerman said. “What I’ll be doing is spending time with Kenny [Holland] and Jim Nill and Jimmy D [Jim Devellano] in the hockey department, and observing how they operate, whether it be contract negotiations, player analysis, just sitting in, listening and watching hockey.”

At the time, everyone inside the organization thought this was rich, the mere suggestion that Yzerman had anything to learn about the business of the Red Wings. After all, he had been in the middle of it for more than 20 years. He knew better than anyone that a few basic principles applied.

At its root, Detroit wasn’t a players’ organization. No star had all the pull, like Mario had in Pittsburgh. Communication didn’t go from ground up. It went from the top down on every count. Players were put in their place by the coaches—first by the most brutal taskmaster, Scotty Bowman, and then the less draconian Mike Babcock. (Let us skip over the brief interregnum of Dave Lewis.) The working hands had to develop a tolerance for both the night-in, night-out drudgery of a 200-foot game and occasional humiliation. Famously, Bowman put Sergei Fedorov, only a couple of years removed from the Hart Trophy, on the blueline for a stretch of games—not because of a shortage of personnel but as a slap-down. That’s how Bowman had won in Montreal, suffering no pushback, demanding praise-free sacrifice.

Because Yzerman bought in, no one could opt out. That said, if you weren’t in Yzerman’s favour, you were well-advised to rent rather than buy in Detroit. That’s what he wanted for Tampa Bay.
. . .

Yzerman went all in to win this season. He had done enough right for Tampa Bay to take a run at the Stanley Cup again this spring, but enough wrong that if Stamkos had carried the Cup on a lap of the rink, it might still have been the last time he’d ever wear a Lightning sweater. But now, through a couple of unforeseeable bad breaks, Yzerman has busted out. His team will need a miracle every other night for two months to play for the Cup. And if winning can’t fix everything, neither will such a disappointing, desultory end.

We've heard a lot of the same stuff about Chicago's dressing room being a joyless hellhole, being a Bowman franchise. They've won the Cup three times, though.

EDIT: Pavel Datsyuk is leaving the NHL after this year. Big loss for hockey.

Islanders win tonight, and they earn the privilege of playing Penguins in the first round and then getting to play either the Caps or Flyers in the 2nd round, if they beat Pitt.

Islanders should tank it tonight. Problem is, Flyers have zero to play for and will likely rest everybody they can.

Image

Ducks also control their first round matchup, but less of a difference than with the Islanders situation; where the Isles jump from the easier half of the Eastern Conference draw to the top half with the more favored to win teams.

Ducks win and they get Nashvegas and push the Kings down to playing the Sharks. Sharks can give the Kings fits.

You sure? I'd rather play the Sharks than the Perds, who have really rounded into form down the stretch. I mean, I know the Sharks are doing the whole shutdown thing well with DeBoer, but nothing about them jumps out to me. Of course, I probably said the same thing about the 2012 Devils.

I think the Isles can beat the Panthers (and hope they do, because I don't want to have to talk about The Great Florida Panther Fans who emerged from a swamp or whatever last Thursday). The Penguins, much less so.

Islanders should throw the game tonight, stay down in the lower half of the draw.

Islanders win and the Rangers would feast on the teams down below. Panthers with Luongo and a 50 year old Jagr? and the Panthers have made the playoffs once this century.

Wings always dangerous in the post-season, esp with it being Datsyuk's final season and their backup goalie could get hot. Don't see Jimmy Howard carrying them further than out of the first round.

Datsyuk's $7.5 mil cap hit for next season, final year of an over 35 contract, could result in Datsyuk playing one more year. There's talk the Yotes will
trade for Datsyuk's dead-wood contract to get to the salary cap floor.

 This is why the NHL fought so hard to keep Phoenix in the league, they needed a team so broke as to assume everyone's dead cap space without paying anything. They're already doing this for Pronger!

Wings will immediately use that freed up cap space to sign Stamkos this off-season. They (rumoredly) almost traded for him. Makes ya wonder if the Wings front-office isn't kicking Datsyuk out the door a season early, to get in on the Stamkos UFA bidding this off-season.

The NHL playoff format, along with many other aspects of the league, are a joke. The #1 team should play #8, 2 & 7, etc...

Post subject:  Re: The NHL's jacked-up divisional playoff seeds

To be fair to los Panteras, they do have a ton of talent on the roster in Bjugstad, Barkov, Ekblad, Huberdeau, Reilly Smith, and Trocheck, with a big contributor or two yet to come, and that's not even counting Jagr and Luongo. Just by making the playoffs, they've done more than they ever did with Weiss, Bouwmeester, Frolik, Horton, Olesz, and all those other high draft picks they've had over the years. Could be a situation like those dear old '09 Blackhawks where everyone goes "but they just don't know how to win in the playoffs!" and then they win two rounds anyway. But I like the Islanders a lot, so I hope they don't win a single game.

Let's just say I have complete confidence in the Isles losing this last game of the year. They've done so much losing up to this point!

Wouldn't shock me. He's not staying in Tampa, and he wouldn't go to a plodding Western team. Probably down to Detroit and Toronto.

Coyotes still have another year to go on Chris Pronger's contract. Pronger hasn't played in the NHL since 2012.

Author:  Curious Hair [ Sun Apr 10, 2016 2:02 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: The NHL's jacked-up divisional playoff seeds

Current Hall of Famer Chris Pronger only costs the Coyotes $575,000 in real money, and given the scumminess of the whole transaction and all things Phoenix Coyotes, the league is probably fronting them the money. Datsyuk, by retiring or defecting, would cost $0. $12,441,429 in cap space for the low low price of $575,000 is pretty good for a team that just lost most if not all of its government subsidy.

Datsyuk leaving for Mother Russia after the playoffs leaves Detroit with a $7.5mil cap hit for next season...per what I read.

They can trade the expiring contract to a bottom feeder who needs to stay above the Cap floor...but they'll likely have to include a pick or prospect to make it work. Then they could make a run at Stamkos.

They can send Martin Frk and a vowel to be named later.

If the Islanders go deep in the playoffs, it won't be because of Tavares, Halak, or even Hamonic. It'll be the work of the best mascot in the NHL...Honky the Car!

Ducks up on the Caps, 2-0, late in the 3rd. Washington rested Ovechkin, Backstrom, Carlson and Orpik.

Islanders tanked to get Panthers first round:

I've wondered all season why they place a car there, right next to the ice? Presumably in place of expensive 100-level seats?

The president of the Nets (yes, Nets, they run the Islanders now) said they make more money selling the space to Honda to put a car there than they would selling season tickets.

I expect to see several Black and White vehicles adorning US Cellular soon, then.

excuse me, Stamkos has 64 points, 2nd on the team to Kucherov with 66 points...

http://lightning.nhl.com/club/stats.htm

tho Stamkos has 6 more actual goals than Kucherov....and so leads the team in putting the biscuit in the basket.
