Like playing golf on a Wednesday in June will have any bearing on his basketball team. By Travis Durkee New Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner has a tireless work ethic and expects nothing less from his future assistants if they plan to rebuild the Yellow Jackets program. With that in mind, he refuses to hire assistants who enjoy time on a golf course. “My first question to anyone I (might) hire is, ‘Do you golf?’” Pastner said (via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution). “If they say, ‘Yes,’ you can’t work for me, because that means five hours on a Sunday or on a Saturday. Can’t. Don’t want it. That’s for my assistant coaches. Any of my assistant coaches, if they’re golfers, not working for me.” According to CBS Sports, Pastner lived on a golf course while coaching at Memphis and even played on his middle school golf team, but his new gig will get his full attention as well the attention of his assistants. “It's not as much that it's golf, it's that, if you're going to be here, you're going to have to work like crazy. We're rebuilding. It's going to be a seven-day-a-week job,” he said. Pastner said he plans to take his time building a coaching staff, and if he’s that picky he may not have a choice but to be patient. |

I can't imagine college basketball assistants make all that much, do they? And add this to the list of "this guy sleeps at the facility" and "nobody coaches harder" type B.S. the sports media feeds us. |

You want to get better, get better players and don't screw them up. And if they are really good they can overcome your fuck ups some of the time. |

I was stunned that an ACC school would hire a turd like Pastner. He is an okay recruiter but terrible X's and O's coach. His teams play with no discipline. |

Pastner has been one of the very BEST recruiters in college bball for the past 15 years. Ghost, you do not know of what you speak. The guy was a recruiting machine when he was an assistant coach and thats why he doesnt want his asst coaches playing golf. He brought in top level talent to AZ and to Memphis with Calapari. You can question how he did it and I agree he is not a good X and O's guy, but as far as a recruiter, not finding a better guy at the job. Now, being a head coach, you dont do as much recruiting anymore, so he expects his assts to work all day and night like he did. Underdstandable, maybe not agreeable. |

Top Assistants are easy 6 figures. I am sure all 3 of coachs K's guys make 6 figures. Then I will guess they have a couple of guys make 50-75K, and then a gaggle of student/grad assistants making nothing to $15K My guy was a top 3 assistant at Wisconsin 10 years ago and he was making $75K, plus bonuses in the way of BBall camp, clinics, etc..but he recruited all day and if they had twitter and as much texting as they do now, I am sure he would be doing it on Sundays too...Sunday he was usually be travelling back home. He came down to Chicago for Fri and Sat hoop games to see kids, would crash at our place and drive back to madison on Sunday...tough to schedule golf in there. He could tell you the "going rate" on any recruit in the nation. Even the kids whose parents wanted them to get a real education and made sure the kid went to school somewhere that actually made sure school mattered, they all wanted their "Payments" Example, going rates of $5,000 for one of the kids 5 Official visits and another envelope then if you wanted to follow up with a "home visit". All of this set up by the street hustlers, as no payment ever comes to the kid or the parents. The final "price" was always different but $40-$50K was about the number in the Q Richardson days. |

Because to be an Asst at a top tier school, gets you a head coaching job, thus you should know and be willing to put in the hours to get the job....then when you become big dick, you can tell others to not golf. The asst coach at Ball St doesnt get the Illinois job, he gets the McNeese St job if he is lucky. |
