Some awful news in the metal world- Jeff Hanneman of Slayer died earlier today. He took sick leave from Slayer in 2011 having been diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis and hadn't returned to date. Cause of Death was liver failure at the age of 49.

I went through the whole "Big 4 of Metal" phase early on in high school, and once I got over it, I effectively stopped following it for the most part (meaning I didn't go out of my way to listen to it)- with the lone exception of Slayer- they've found their way into my rotation consistently since I "discovered" them in the 8th grade. Not quite sure what happens next for the band, but he was a major part of it and I have difficulty envisioning them go on without him (though I wouldn't put it past Kerry King and his ego to do so).

Terrible. I felt like weeping when I stumbled upon this news.

They have been touring with Gary Holt of Exodus since the spider bite. Hanneman did play a few songs at one of the Big 4 shows a year or so ago. I managed to see them live a couple times without trying to. I actually saw his younger brothers band at a VFW in like 1989.

Guy Lombardo would've been a bigger story.
