Love him or hate him, pretty prolific artist. Just watched 5 years. Not bad. From working with Luther, Eno, Lennon, Reznor, Townsend etc... Pretty good career what era do you like?

Definitely an icon. Many great albums/songs. Reached out to Lorde to tell her she is picking up where he left off (or words to that effect, or members of Words To That Effect.)

The Berlin trilogy is his best work, especially Low, and especially-especially "Subterraneans" and "Be My Wife." Ziggy Stardust is the one album of his golden era (to say "years" would have been lame) that I don't really like.

To me, Ziggy is his best record. Also, his work on Lust For Life, which really comes off as more of a Bowie record than an Iggy record.

I like "Starman" and "Suffragette City," of course, but who doesn't? I just think Aladdin Sane improves on it quite a bit. Low, though, what a masterpiece. Station to Station is pretty much perfect, too.

Same can be said for Lou Reed's Transformer. Listen to the demo on youtube of "Satellite of Love" by the Velvet Underground. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xuhFlp3Vy8)

Pure genius. Here's a glimpse into his creative process.

Little fat man who sold his soul
Little fat man who sold his dream

Pathetic little fat man
No one's bloody laughing
The clown that no one laughs at
They all just wish he'd die

He's so depressed at being hated
Fatso takes his own life
He blows his stupid brains out
But the twat would probably miss

He sold his soul for a shot at fame
Catchphrase and wigs and the jokes are lame
He's got no style, he's got no grace
He's banal and facile, he's a fat waste of space

See his pug-nosed face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
See his pug-nosed face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
See his pug-nosed face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
The little fat man with the pug-nosed face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
Little fat man, pug-nosed face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
He's a little fat pug-nosed face
Pug, pug, pug, pug

I like that version better.

Bowie certainly influenced the people he worked with. Mott the Hoople made three really great records- Mott The Hoople, All The Young Dudes, and Mott. The debut album, Mott the Hoople isn't something a lot of people are familiar with. It's like it was a different band before Bowie got hold of them and glammed them up on Dudes.

I got that song stuck in my head for about a month once. Still like it but too dangerous to listen to it.

I think Bowie was the first artist to securitize his future royalties into a lump sum payment ($50m or something like that?). I can only assume that worked out great for him, as I think most artists are not getting much in the way of residuals these days.

When did he do that? Very interesting.
