Compositionally, it's (Toto's version) a pretty solid piece of music.
I haven't heard Weezer's. But I have seen this a million times...

Heard both songs. They sounded pretty much just like Toto. Congratulations!

Hard Pass

I just looked up the lyrics on this. This is batshit nonsense. I guess lyrics weren't their thing.

I like Weezer. Good band, cool songs.

This was incredibly "meh". They added some crunch / raw guitar to the chorus, but outside of that it at times sounds like karaoke.

I listened to the "Rosanna" cover and it sounded better, but FFS....where is the outro? That has some of the most killer guitar runs ever and they passed. Disappointed.

Steve Lukather seems to be a weirdo and is having trouble accepting the fact that he's now on old man, but Jesus the guy could just fucking shred.

Steve Lukather sounds like the Steve Porcaro character from Yacht Rock.

Too professional.
Weezer's cover was somewhat impressive because Africa is a bit of a difficult arrangement (by Weezer standards)...
Toto could learn and master the entire Weezer discography in an afternoon.
Hash Pipe (the song) sucks, but I still think the whole thing is kinda entertaining.

Thanks for sending me down a Yacht Rock worm hole. I never heard of that before.

Edit: I meant to quote the CH post.

Agreed on all.

I think Weezer could have done a much more interesting cover of "Africa". There was absolutely no reason to 100% copy the keyboard parts on the intro and verses. I'm no Weezer Superfan but I believe they employ a pretty stripped down tone of 2 guitars, bass, drums, vocals. Just cover the song like you'd play one of your own tunes.

The whole thing is funny. Toto covering Hash Pipe was a cool response.

Perhaps realizing that it wasn't that great, they got another guy to help out....

His solo at the start sounds really good... you can skip the rest of it because it is drowned out. Still want him to do a SB halftime.

More of a homage than a cover.

Weird al has had some serious staying power. I love playing the old parody songs he did to my kids. The logo of bemusement and amusement on their faces brings great joy to my life.
