In terms of artistic output, Lennon died 9 years too late, Morrison two.

You think so? I remember you diving into this topic under a different username. In comparison to Paul and a couple of others I thought he was still writing relevant stuff. It wasn't the same, but still decent writing IMO. If he had another few years to get back to music I think he would have at least one more good run in him. Who knows. He dead.

"Imagine" was Lennon's last worthwhile work, and it's overrated. "Walls and Bridges" was the best record he put out after that. And both of those pale in comparison to the "Plastic Ono Band" record: the best solo album recorded by a Beatle. Had George Harrison condensed "All Things Must Pass" to a single LP, it would be a close second rather than a distant one. By the way, that's another album that benefited tremendously from remastering, as it cleaned up Spector's wall of sound sludge.

Sorry, "Double Fantasy" was soft rock garbage (IMO) and maybe he would've cranked out a few solid AOR songs in the '80s (in the vein of "Nobody Told Me), but nothing even close to what he did up until 1970. I'm not sure that Lennon would've made it through the decade anyway. He looked like he was 60 when he turned 40.

Just my opinion. He could've had a renaissance like Dylan or Young. And, of course, I'd rather Lennon not be dead. But I shudder to think that we would've been given a Beatles reunion album riddled with all the production cliches of early '80s mainstream pop.

Top 10 +1

Duane Allman (24)
Berry Oakley (24)
Allen Woody (Gov't Mule, ABB) 44 but still too young.
SRV (35)

Randy Rhoads (25)
Dimebag Darrell Abbott (38)
John Bonham (32)
Jim Croce (30)
Keith Moon (32)
Ronnie Van Zant (29)

I can't add Layne or Cobain only because they chose to be gone too soon.

...and yes, I agree Queen is definitely under appreciated. Also had no idea Robert Johnson was only 27 when he died, he definitely makes the list.

Forgot to add Rivers Cuomo when Rolling Stone murdered him in late '96.

Would Metallica have been as big as they are if Burton never died?
