I've been hearing this a lot lately. It's fine, I guess. I don't really like the original that borrowed from the original, anyway, though.

I don't get Lana del Rey. It seems to me she's more of a cult figure for the extremely online rather someone whose music people actually like.

It's kind of nice mellow background, summer, beach music. I don't think I'd like much else by her.

Yeah, but the Pitchfork crowd thinks it's cool to like her, I guess. Spanky probably knows.

man...i hadn't listened to that in ages.

pharcyde on its own and sublime on its own both take me away to a different old place.

Nirvana's Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam from the Vaselines or their Where Did You Sleep Last Night cover of Lead Belly. Both on unplugged and equally awesome.

I like "Ripple" by Jane's Addiction, but mostly because Deadheads hate it.

Yeah, I haven't put a whole lot of effort into listening to LDR's music, but I'm aware of it and her version of that Sublime song is 100x better than the Sublime song. I fucking hate Sublime. Lana Del Rey is pretty hot though.

Here's my issue with that cover. Unlike the Gershwin song that provides part of the hook and expresses sentiments so universal that it has become a standard, this song is very personal and specific. A lot of the dead guy's songs were extremely personal to the point of mentioning his Dalmatian by name. I just don't see how you can cover a song like that with any sincerity. Just because a person likes a song, doesn't mean she should perform her own version of it. It's like covering that Harry Chapin song where he gives a cab ride to his ex and smokes weed. It doesn't really work.

Best version of "Summertime" is the Miles/Evans arrangement. I never want to hear the LDR-via-Sublime one ever again as long as I live.

Do you consider the Sublime/LDR song a cover of the Gershwin song?

Interpolation. What's more important is that it's bad.

I don't really hate it as a vignette about a junkie musician and his pedestrian life in Long Beach. I just don't see a reason to cover it.

Ha yeah in my youth I loved it just for that reason.

I actually like the Kurt Vile/ J Mascis version of Box of Rain.
