I’m not arguing against “Blood on the Tracks”—ok, TOOM is Top 5 for me. Better? “Not Dark Yet” is one of my favorite songs he’s ever done, that’s for sure.

FS mentioned The Shat. “Has-Been” is an excellent album. Probably one of his finest achievements.

Tom Waits - “Mule Variations”.

The Beatles produced 12 albums in 7 years, quit at 30, made a few really good solo albums and then that was it. No one makes great albums in their 40's and very few artists make good albums in their 30's. The answer is no one. The Beatles model is the way to go.

Bad take

Mule Variations i good one but Rain Dog's and Franks Wild Years are far superior

That is an interesting take. Time Out of Mind is a fine album, but it felt like more of a return to his 60's form than anything. I would be interested to hear why you think it's better than his stuff from the 60's and Blood on the Tracks.

Gotta ask W_Z. I think Blood on the Tracks is the best album ever made by anybody, so I think that lets you know where I stand on Dylan’s best album.

Blood on the Tracks is great but Blonde on Blonde is better IMO. Regardless TOoM is solid but down the list.

"blonde on blonde" begins with one of bob dylan's worst songs, and doesn't have a single song better than "tangled up in blue". music critics pick "blonde on blonde" as his best but i don't. i don't even think it's as good as "free wheelin'", "highway 61" or "john wesley harding".

I was looking up Gaucho-era Steely Dan records thinking those dudes were in their mid-forties by then, only to find out they both just turned 30.

I love all those albums. It’s hard to choose. Blonde on Blonde is a strong choice. I just haven’t put anything above Blood on the Tracks since I became a fan and can’t see myself ever doing so.

It’s been a bit since I’ve revisited Time out of Mind tho so may do that tonight after a few more drinks.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing for SD...and Meat Loaf too.

I don’t mean to diss Blonde on Blonde I just don’t have the reverence for it that a lot of fans do. It’s a great album but it’s a double album and those are always heavy handed.

George Carlin's best album definitely was after 40 -- take your pick from You Are All Diseased, Complaints and Grievances, Its Bad For Ya, or any of the 90s stuff.

Feels like an entirely different category/thread

So you think comedians deserve separate thread categories and award categories for their albums? "Those people" don't deserve the same accolades even though they've repeatedly outsold musical albums throughout the early history of rock and roll until CDs were invented? Redd Foxx isn't good enough, only Red Hot Chili Peppers... screw Bill Cosby, you only acknowledge David Crosby? Dude, you need to get woke, man.

I thought long and hard about this and its really hard to come up with anyone but I am going to go with George Strait. He was 40 or turning 40 when Pure Country came out so everything after that, which includes a ton of hits, was post 40 for him.

Eric Clapton - Unplugged

I know his solo stuff is not everybody's cup of tea, but that is likely his best work. He was 47 when it was recorded/released.

Oh My God. Please say it isn't so, Frank. That shit is an abomination. The castrated version of "Layla" is pathetic. He took a tortured song of desperation about being hopelessly in love with his best friend's wife and sat strumming a bastardized version with his legs crossed while a bunch of rich yuppies sang along. And "Tears in Heaven"? Just dreadful stuff. I'd much rather listen to "Eric Clapton Pushed His Kid" by Severed Scrotum.

Like I said, I know his stuff isn't for everybody. But that album is one of the best selling live albums of all time (at one point, it was #1) and won six Grammys. You can't deny that with the crap throughout most of his solo career, its probably his best solo album.

You really think it's better than Eric Clapton, 461 Ocean Boulevard, or Slowhand? I mean, I get it. If I want to listen to Delaney & Bonnie I can just listen to the real thing. I don't need some washed up British junkie aping them. But those records are still pounds better than that pussy stuff he did later on. I nominate "Tears in Heaven" as the worst song ever recorded.

Slowhand is a great record, but in terms of commercial success it really doesn't hold a candle to Unplugged.

Yield is a great PJ record- one of my favorite albums ever- but Ten and Vs have that lapped a few times in terms of sales.

He has his moments. Cream could be heavy. And the Layla record alone is great enough to justify the love, but some of that later stuff... just awful.

EC Was Here is a FAR superior live album to Unplugged.

Clapton was in the midst of his deepest depths of drug addiction and internal struggles. The blues are real and thick... Unplugged is polished and neutered meh.

One of my college roommates played "Wonderful Tonight" upon returning from the library late at night. Probably 3-4 times a week. I was never the biggest Clapton fan before that, but I definitely developed a strong dislike. I never was all that much into Cream, other than "White Room" and his solo work reminds me of the Dave Matthews Band - stellar musicianship, but subpar songwriting. Layla unplugged is an abomination. Motherless Children is a cool tune, though.

I'm a Clapton fan, but I know there is enough shit through his solo career that it turns people off of him entirely. He's a great guitarist, especially in the Blues genre.

But the title of the thread is best album after age 40. In terms of commercial success, nearly 30 million copies sold and six Grammys for a record made after age 40 is going to be tough to beat.
