Fine, but my original issue is that people act like Rock and Country are equal. They are not.

Rock is above the rest. It just is.

And half the headliners being non rock is bad.

Headliners matter.

 how is that half of the headliners when this thing is like 13 days and we have only seen 4?

The number of days and headliners are not always synonymous

If these end up being the 4 biggest acts, its a bad idea.

and they cant cater to everyone. Irish Boy would love to go up there and listen to some classical and a guy I used to work with would love some Horrorcore.

I seem to recall the Summerfest folks changing the overall theme every few years. The late mid-late 90s had a lot of metal acts. Mid 2000s were jammy-funk rock-alternative stuff. The past few years have been a little more of a hip-hop vibe. Apparently it is Country music time.

There could very well be a concerted effort going on in that regard. The violence at the State Fair caused all kinds of rash decisions.

What does that mean?

Are you implying country fans are less criminal than hip hop fans?

I don't think many Country music fans are black youths attacking white people as they leave the fair grounds...so maybe the Summerfest organizers took note of that. However, I tend to think it has more to do with changing things up than anything else.
There have been pretty bad years in the past. This could easily be one based on the headliners. Hard to really know before seeing the smaller stage lineups.

That would be a poor way of assessing things.

Twas not the hip hop.

I understand that. but, I think we can agree that Camps, Ivan, and OKC are probably not listening to much Corrosion of Conformity or Tool. Whereas, we know Keeping Score has Taylor Swift on repeat.

Jason Aldean is alternative rock. He just has a southern accent.

For a second I swear I saw Jason Mraz listed as a headliner. Humanity has retained a little bit of my faith.... for now.

As I say every year, Summerfest >>> Taste of Chicago. I will always have fond memories of being a 20yo YOUT hanging out @ the Levine Lodge plowing back Levine Reds watching the hip hop acts (do they still have the Levine Lodge stage doing only hip hop? If anything it'd make policing/profiling easier =) before getting a proper gyro @ either greektown gyros on Oakland or Oakland Gyros... I know it WS the one that burned down in the last year or two (RIP).

Not to mention, having a day long roster of "underground/conscious" hip hop on a stage far enough away from the flabby sunburned en masse stereotype of wisconsonites is always a plus. Not to mentioned I remembered it being way less of a pain in the ass to get-to/park/leave. Well organized festival with something like 25-75% less transparent gouging than the taste offers.

Never heard of this guy and just played half a dozen songs on You Tube. He is the modern day
country that I was expecting. Who were you going to compare him to in the alternative rock scene?

Right that's my point.

A lot of hip hop fans are black. Doesnt mean a lot of hip hop fans are violent assholes.

I know that's not what you are saying, but not having hip hop to keep out the blacks is pretty...not ok

We are talking about the State of 'Sconsin...

Last year at Summerfest was The Roots and the year before that was N.E.R.D. on the Miller Stages...

Here was last years headliners at the Marcus.

June 27, 2012 – Rascal Flatts with Little Big Town, Eli Young Band and Edens Edge
June 30, 2012 – Lady Antebellum with Darius Rucker and Thompson Square
July 1, 2012 – The Beach Boys
July 3, 2012 – Tiesto with Steve Aoki, Zedd, R3hab, Tommy Trash and Pierce Fulton
July 4, 2012 – Iron Maiden with Alice Cooper
July 5, 2012 – Zac Brown Band
July 6, 2012 – Big Time Rush with Cody Simpson and Rachel Crow
July 7, 2012 – Aerosmith with Cheap Trick
July 8, 2012 – Neil Diamond

Two metal bands, two rock bands, and the rest is relative crap...

Wow, that lineup wasn't too great either now that you post it. I'll just wait for the side stage info. I haven't
paid for a show inside the Ampitheater in over 15 years.

In my opinion, the Summerfest "sideshow" acts are always better than the headliners.

One year I saw Wilco and Andrew Bird there back to back. I think the headliner that night was Sammy Hagar.

I absolutely LOVE the vibe at Summerfest. Everybody seems to be blissfully wasted, the music is generally very good, the food and beer are high quality, and the lakefront setting is fantastic. Plus Milwaukee is just an awesome city in and of itself.

Snobiness? I don't see that. Those of us discussing it also tend to be the ones that go every year. The Marcus acts have been pretty "bad" for years now. Last act I saw at the Marcus was Tool in 2007.

Yeah, I don't think anyone was being snobby. The Marcus shows are typically bad; the far less expensive side stage shows are frequently excellent. Over the years I have seen fantastic side stage concerts by Fountains of Wayne, Old 97s (twice), Wilco (twice), Son Volt, Andrew Bird, Lucinda Williams, Jimmy Cliff, Cheap Trick, and a few others. Summerfest is great!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers scheduled for the ampitheater June 28th. This will be the 13th time
performing at Summerfest. Never seen them live before. He probably puts on a pretty good show.

He does put on a good show.

I saw him at Alpine Valley in what had to be in the fall of 1996. I got to go backstage. There was nothing backstage except a completely eaten buffet and a few people wandering around. Saw the now dead bassist walk off into the field with some sketchy guy to coke up before the show.
