for the record, have you ever listened to a Vampire Weekend song/album ?

Sure. I've heard at least six or seven different songs, many of them more than once. I did hear one not too long ago, where my first thought was, "this sounds sort of like the Minutemen."

I'm not sure exactly what it is I hate so much about them, but it goes beyond the music. There's just something that strikes me as less then genuine about them. As if the band is an extracurricular activity for them. Besides that, there just too fucking twee for me.

I'm surprised you like them. I've found you usually have impeccable taste in music.

i can understand the too cute/twee argument
i just think they're fun. not like a top 10 band ever, not my personal favorite band ever, but its a fun listen. its nothing too substantial, sure, but sometimes that hits the spot.

Yeah, the Graceland thing seems to be what they were going for, the African influences. But I would compare Paul Simon's take on African music to Elvis' take on black R&B and Vampires Weekend's version of African music to Pat Boone's take on R&B.

I don't know the name of the song that struck me as Minuteman-esque. I have to admit, I was surprised when the DJ said it was Vampire Weekend.

This band was a trendsetter in many ways. They were considered the first rock and roll band to ever be signed to Columbia Records, the largest record label in the world at the time. When Wand Scepter Records, a smaller label, had such a major success with The Kingsmen’s version of “LOUIE LOUIE,” it accelerated the promotional drive for Paul Revere & The Raiders, as record company executives realized they could have been the ones to have the hit with the song. Long before glitter rock, theatre rock, punk rock, or MTV, Paul Revere & the Raiders were THE band to see, using their performances as a showcase for their theatrical anarchy, wearing wild outfits, and enacting goofy stunts, such as setting their hair on fire, among other things. I don't think that one would make my top 20 for the band, let alone top song. Not a bad song, but they've done better.

I totally agree they have done better songs. But in terms of a quintessential Rock Song, I always come back to this one. It's not fancy. Part of what I like about it is the simplicity. Strong lyrics and beat dramatically building up to a guitar solo...and then it ends. Always leaves me wanting more.
