Sparks! My guy Todd Rundgren produced their first album when they were named. "Halfnelson".

After linking to "What's New in Baltimore?", I had to fire up Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention and was immediately reminded of how much I love Johnny Guitar Watson. First of all, you gotta love a guitarist whose nickname is "Guitar." I don't think many people can pull that off. I don't even know how much guitar work he contributed to FZ's albums; I just love his vocals. And it turns out he was a huge figure in rhythm and blues who never got enough credit. Way cool of Frank to give him work.

Favorite FZ sidemen:
Ian Underwood
Ike Willis
Ruth Underwood (really defines the Zappa sound more than almost anyone)
Terry Bozzio
Ray White
Johnny Guitar Watson
Jean-Luc Ponty
the Synclavier
Jimmy Carl Black, the Indian of the group
Don Pardo

+1 on Bozzio. Ridiculous talent.

I haven't even sat down with his stuff with Missing Persons. I just loved him as the id of FZ's band. "Titties and Beer," what a classic! Second Zappa song I ever heard, back in my junior year of high school. First was "Son of Mr. Green Genes" and I said "I gotta get into this guy." Then "Titties and Beer" and I said "I really gotta get into this guy." And then I ended up loving the abstract jazzy stuff even more than the fart jokes.

I have a friend whose ex-wife was so fanatical about Sparks it was insane.
At the time I had never heard them, and when she would go on and on about them
in conversation, my friend would just kind of roll his eyes and try to change the subject.
Sparks played one of the huge festivals in the last few years, maybe Coachella.
I watched them on the webcast, and I couldn't believe what I was watching.
It was just so fucking weird and unpleasant to listen to.
I then knew why their marriage didn't last very long.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about Sparks. Few songs I like, but they're not a band I feel compelled to love.
