Yea, I don't think this is going to go well. I really wished I could have seen them back in the day.

My favorite bootlegs were from the Diver Down (Hide Your Sheep) tour, circa 1982-83. Do a search for Largo (shot in Maryland), Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the US Festival.

Of those 3, Buenos Aires is my favorite. They sounded great, and Dave's interaction with the crowd is really cool. The US Festival show is iconic, despite the fact that Dave was ripped off his ass to start the show. It got better as it went on. Largo is just a solid show.

All I know is that at the time, the hottest chicks in high school all wanted Eddie or Dave. Man the groupies they mustve nailed.

All great picks, I have US festival on VHS, uncut, Dave is still awesome and Eddy was a mess too. Some stuff from 1984 leaks into that show as well.

Another one would be the Oakland show from 1981, I think. That's a band that is absolutely on fire.

Ed was a complete mess for a long time but Oakland 83 is all there is really from that era. Hagar era was awesome if you get your head out of your ass and watch the DVD's. Amazing all the talk here about singers as they age dropping a key but now this tour and the DVD/CD from last tour will suck. Blow me.

Not sure if the "blow me" is directed at me. What the hell did I do? :D

There are 3 pro shot videos (Unchained, So This is Love?, and Hear About it Later) that were recorded at some Oakland shows during the Fair Warning tour. Is that what you're talking about? That was in 1981.

It's from Good Fellas. Tommy's girlfriend is talking about how talented Sammy Davis, Jr. is, and she says that she can understand why a white girl would go for him. Tommy almost loses it, and says to her, "hey, I don't want to be kissing Nat King Cole here."

Nothing, Mike is probably drunk. The herd is just upset because another ambush failed, and once again, they will go hungry.

Definitely find Buenos Aires on YouTube.

I agree about the Oakland shows. Funny thing, but even though it's "live," you can tell some of Dave's lyrics were beefed up in a studio as the video isn't always in sync with the audio. Not being overly critical as I think he was on top of his game.

I have a show from the 1984 tour in Montreal. My only issue is the speed at which they played. Everything was sped up. Must've been the coke.

Good one too, his voice was showing wear and tear at that point. Loved the monster scissor kick off the drum riser at the beginning of Unchained.

The jump off the drum riser always kicked ass. Loved that shit. I may or may not have jumped off couches in a drunken stupor in college trying to replicate it. Poorly. And lamely.

Not drunk but yes Oakland '81 is/was the holy grail of VH concerts. With Hagar they monetized and that was fine with me as they really did good stuff. Chus can check me but they had quite a lot of #1 cd's?

Either way my point still stands. People bitch no Michael Anthony or Dave does not sing like 1982. Blow me. Stones, The Dead and every other band that is a legend goes out and does nostalgia.

When Ed does a solo and busts into Panama or You Really Got Me I am happy.

I don't care enough to look it up, but they were huge. Nobody is doubting that. They were one of the biggest bands on the planet when I was in high school. I remember kids being forced to turn their F.U.C.K. shirts inside out.

pittmike wrote:

There really isn't a point in there, just rambling incoherence.

pittmike wrote:

Nobody bitched about that. It was correctly pointed out that Eddie is an insecure Caller Bob, and he gave Michael an ultimatum regarding his friendship with Sammy. You have to admit that's pathetic, I don't care how much you love Eddie.

pittmike wrote:

I don't think anybody expects Dave to sing like he did in 1982. You lose your voice when you get old. It happens.

pittmike wrote:

I'm sure SomeGuy will blow you, if you take care of him first. Again, I'm not sure what the Dead has to do with this. Why a thread about VH, had to become about the Grateful Dead and me is probably confusing to most reading this.

pittmike wrote:

You should listen to whatever brings you joy, and not worry about what anybody else thinks. Especially, when that person hasn't even voiced an opinion.

Women and Children First, Fair Warning and Diver Down were hugely influential for me in high school. Just a great run, right there. The Fair Warning tour was my first VH show, DLR forgot the words to Romeo Delight. Diver Down is criminally underrated and my appreciation for AVH as a drummer has grown immensely over the years. Loved the one-off kits he put together.

That being said, Eddie is a fucking tool.

Oakland is probably my favorite by a fair margin. Just on fucking fire, DLR at the zenith and the band was tight as hell. Great stage chemistry at that point.

The nostolgia tours make a ton of cash for a reason....no one cares about the new stuff no matter if it's good or not. All about going back to a time and place.

Eddie is a tool. He ruined it all in 1996 after the MTV awards, there was applause and then the place went nuts when Dave came out last. That was the time and place for a reunion and Eddy was an idiot. I'm sure Dave was a goof about if but you just know, and by reports, that Eddy was the douche in this one and most band things.

As for forgetting lyrics and such, a lot of that was Dave being the showman, "ohhh maaan I forgot the fuckin words! Yeeeeooowwww!" Or the "I'm gonna fcuk your girlfriend, pal!" A lot of that happened during every show. It's awesome but he knew what he was doing.

Just like midgets and the whiskey/ice tea...all part of the plan.

Doesn't matter. Vote Chus as he is always right in his mind. The brick thing has no way out for me. You can hit Chus square in the forehead with a wooden bat and he would argue it was aluminum.

Yes. They should have played together again why not. Bet if they had it to do over they would have. Too many egos to bite it and just say yes. Everybody loses.

I agree that it is difficult to understand PittMike when he is three sheets to the wind, but I believe he is talking about The Last Waltz, the concert movie about The Band.

Where is the Gary Cherone love? Van Hagar honestly was never my thing. I saw a great Van Halen cover band though one time at in an impromptu show in LA at the Galaxy. It was Gary on vocals, Michael Anthony on bass, George Lynch on guitar and oddly Nuno on drums. It was during the NAMM show and was a crazy mixture of stars. Sorta like Dave Grohls birthday party a few months ago. Yeah Dave isn't what he once was but that dude was a top three frontman for sure. I place Dave higher than EVH and I am a guitar player. I respect EVH but never was a huge fan. Eruption is tripe.

There is no Gary Cherone love. None. Wasn't he Extremes lead singer? Good voice just not a fit with VH.

Van Halen is really an interesting and sad story. The band belongs to Eddie and Alex, but I believe it all sits with Eddie and Alex just goes along for the ride. I’m 42 yrs old so while the DLR era was on my radar, it was a few years before my prime music time.

As a guitarist, I obviously hold EVH in very high regard. I not believe we’ve seen an innovative style and talent comparable to him since. He’s not my fav, but in terms of creativity Hendrix came first, and then EVH is second.

DLR in his prime is arguably the greatest frontman ever. He was charismatic, talented, and entertaining as hell. Since I was younger, I had not beef with the Van Hagar era…I always liked Sammy. Sammy was certainly not DLR in his prime, but he has proven to age WAY better.

Michael Anthony IMO has proven to be an underrated factor in the VH sound. His backing vocals were huge and filled in beautifully with both DLR and Hagar.

The facts are out there and there isn’t much room for debate. EVH is a horrible drunk…it has clouded his decision making in the later years and I don’t see it getting any better. When DLR left after 1984, I think there was mutual problems and the split was inevitable. EVH got lucky with Hagar and kicking him out was a mistake. Teasing a DLR reunion on the Greatest Hits collection was a mistake. Bringing in Gary Cherone was a mistake. Refusing to work with Michael Anthony was a mistake. More years have passed and they’ve been very unproductive. One tour, but lots of cancellations and limited new music. EVH has had health issues and has clearly been on and off the wagon.

I saw VH with Hagar in 1988 and I’m good. No disrespect to DLR but his voice is trashed and I really find the whole Wolfgang replacing Michael Anthony in horrible taste. All that adds up to me having ZERO interest in seeing them.
Keep it.
