He should be right there next to Lou Reed and a couple guys over from Neil Young.

Bruce Dickinson is a good call.

I'd go with:

Scott Weiland
Sebastian Bach
Maynard James Keenan
Chris Cornell
Freddie Mercury

seriously. Dylan might be the worst most popular vocalist ever.

Cornell is objectively up there. Had near 4 octave range.

Mercury
the Rogers, Daltrey and Paul
Steve Perry-may be the best
Robert Plant

A lot of heritage rock guys...he's in that company.

It's kinda relative. I mean I'd pick Mercury just because but if you are doing it based on octave range it's not him. Axl has 5 octave range, Mike Patton a 6 apparently. I don't think I'd say Mike Patton was a top 5 voice.

Aside from a handful of Faith No More songs, Mike Patton makes music for people who hate listening to music.
And I also don't understand why people still even bother with Keenan/Tool/etc. It must be a total drag to be in a band with that guy.

I haven't seen Daryl Hall, Todd Rundgren or Michael Sweet mentioned in this thread. Those dudes have some pipes too.

I think Maynard is underrated as a "voice" guy. I think people see him as more of an yeller instead of a singer. But, those people probably aren't listening to all of his music.

As long as we are listing terrible singers, how about Ronnie James Dio?

Good call on Darryl Hall. I can't believe I left him off of my list. I also have to add Levon Helm from The Band to my list, too.

Like the Matthew Sweet, always thought Bob Mould had a voice.

Kate Pierson is one that will get me every time

Thom Yorke has shot his vocal cords over the years but he had great pipes circa The Bends and OK Computer.

Allow me to tongue-in-cheek present Don Henley as an honorable mention to any top 5...I would never try to position him in the company of some of the others mentioned but the fact that when you see him live you get note-for-note perfection is a testament to just how good he is.

came across an article praising Mike Patton and putting him in the company of Axl Rose (sure) Paul McCartney (sure) and Roger Waters (uh, what?)

Yes, his work on Operation: Mindcrime was amazing. It was sad to see him become such a dbag in later years, to the point Mike Portnoy dubbed him "Geoff Taint."

One of the best albums ever. No one seems to mention it.

Yeah, that's a good one, but it doesn't sound Eno-ish enough to be U2. I also like "Thinking About You," "Lurgee," and "Blow Out." It might be a better album than The King of Limbs.
