I would argue that Fagen has a uniquely sardonic voice that is perfect for Steely Dan. It wouldn't play in any other setting.

Exactly . He sounds like no one else . I think that’s why it’s hard to hear a Steely Dan cover band because in addition to needing the chops to perform the music , the vocals always seem off because of Fagen’s uniqueness .

Either Golden Jet hates idiosyncratic vocalists or he was violated with a dildo by an English dandy on holiday.

I'm not sure.

Do you think "Dirty Work" would have been better or worse with Fagen on vocals? I love to sing along with it but is missing that Steely Dan bitterness.

There are just certain vocalists that are grating. Then again, there are certain grating vocalists that I love.

Love: Daltrey, Jagger, Waits

Hate: Collins, Young, Corgan

My best friend's dad and my childhood dentist had a Dobro.
They're fun, but heavy.

What's your take on Rod Stewart? As a kid he was a rock God. He chose to go pop or something. Good for him I guess. Sucked for a young beni though.

Such a good album it deserves its own thread. "Walk of Life" always reminds me of The Heavy Fuel Crew. Money for Nothing reminds me of the pothead that used to bring his boombox on the high school bus. He'd play that song and Crazy Train over and over.

This CD got heavy listening when I was in college. So Far Away always reminds me of my now-wife who had to go back to California for the summers. the first time she left I cried in my dorm room and got a horrendous nose bleed.

The album will be 35 years old next year!

can't believe I missed this thread. Yes on everything you said. Great album.

Horrible music. Can't stand 'Em.

This is terrible news .... now we have to engage in a pugilistic activity.

The words "Steely Dan" and "Horrible Music" should never be in the same sentence. Not even in the same paragraph.
I've found myself listening to them a lot lately, and then watching YouTube tutorials on the players/how-to's.
Haitian Divorce is a new fave, I don't even have that record.
I do have 2 copies of Aja on vinyl (1 is a MoFi, the other one is normal), Can't Buy a Thrill and Aja also on flac.
They're not everyone's cup of tea, but neither is Whitesnake or Justin Bieber.

Never liked Steely Dan. They were so weak sounding.

Rod Stewart - for a long time the rock and roll establishment looked down on his disco era but that era made him the superstar he is known as now. And time heals wounds and his late 70s disco stuff I think sounds great. It sort of is rock and roll nowadays. His earlier stuff w/ the Faces was always great and his 80s stuff well, it was 80s stuff. He fit that ballad soft rock phase in the 80s perfectly. I think his career tuned out pretty successfully.

He's a multi-millionaire and he marries a younger 6'0" tall blonde about every ten years so I guess I would agree.

I used to hate Steely Dan, but the older I get the more I seem to enjoy them. I think it might be just a function of hearing the same songs over and over again on the radio, eventually they just grow on you.

Also, I had an interesting Brothers in Arms experience today. I was listening to the HD2 channel on 101.1 (it's calling itself The Loop), they played Money for Nothing, and completely erased the word "burrito" every time it was supposed to come up in the song. It's a mean-spirited and rude word and I'm not a big fan, but when did it attain the same status as the other f word?

Over the weekend I heard an add for the perfect BPR tour.

The Royal Affair Tour
Yes
Asia
John Lodge (Moody Blues fame)
Carl Palmer (Emerson Lake & Palmer)

Nothing screams BPR quite like one member of a band struggling to keep themselves relevant.

Wait a minute. Weren't half of Yes in Asia? I thought Asia was a supergroup.

At least Candy Darling is still allowed to give head on the radio!

IMO it's odder than just that.

Asia are an English progressive (AKA Puss) rock band formed in London in 1981. The most commercially successful line-up was its original, which was a supergroup of four members of different progressive rock bands of the 1970s: lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton of King Crimson and U.K., guitarist Steve Howe of Yes, keyboardist Geoff Downes of Yes and the Buggles, and drummer Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

It's odd because they offered meet and greet packages for Yes or Asia or Lodge at the Aurora show. I guess you got either Howe/Yes and Downes/Asia or vice versa. https://riveredgeaurora.com/events/royal-affair/

Who's the vocalist for Asia? (Wetton died a few years ago).

That's a weird lineup considering the cross pollination of members.
