It's laughable, this Beatles are overrated shit. Lennon/McCartney tower over their contemporary songwriting teams. Sure they wrote some bubblegum pop...but they had serious songwriting chops and produced more great music in a relatively miniscule period of time than anybody.

The Beatles are still a huge influence and they haven't been a band for 50 years. They transcended multiple genres. There music is gorgeous set to an orchestra.

Goffin/King and the rest are fucking great...but they're no Lennon/McCartney. They stand with the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century...at least.

Maybe there were a couple good psychedelic songs but Kenny Rodgers did that too and his wasn't a Mish mash of mumbo jumbo and weirdo sitar.

You mean Kenny Loggins ?

No. Kenny Rogers.

Take it easy. It's only the Beatles. It's not like they are the eggmen.

Their first albums were “sell-outs.” They they did whatever the fuck they wanted. That’s why I don’t get dissing them for the I Wanna Hold Your Hand days. Even then, John’s screaming on Twist and Shout among other things, was amazing.

Are you really sure about all of that or have you just been beaten over the head with it so much that you've accepted it as gospel?

I'm pretty sure Lennon and McCartney don't tower over Brian Wilson. Are the Beatles really better or even more influential than the Byrds?

Awful.

yup yup yup yup yup

Lot of peer pressure to like the beatles. like it was forced upon so many. like if you didnt recognize their genius you were an idiot. fuck that.

and i think also a lot of their popularity has to do w/ conditioning. their songs in the past even after they broke up were played in elevators and everywhere where people were conditioned to like them without consciously knowing what was going on.

In my top 5-10 Beatles songs.

Supposedly inspired by Notes from Underground.

While I am at it...

Favorite Beatles lyrics, and probably the best lyrics (in the shorter category) I have heard would have to be "Eleanor Rigby."

Yeah, that's where I am with them. I guess what bugs me is the prevailing Boomer opinion that they are the "G.O.A.T." and to even question such is absurd. It's sort of like challenging Jordan being the "G.O.A.T." in Chicago.

Are Lennon and McCartney really better pop songwriters than Goffin-King or Bacharach-David? I don't think so. And the Beatles covered a bunch of Larry Williams songs. Did Larry ever cover the Beatles?

Man get the fuck out of here with this narrative that MJ being the GOAT is Chicago centric. Its a universally accepted fact among NBA fans over the age of 30 nation wide.

And yeah the Beatles are fucking great too. The hype is for a reason

In a world without the beatles...

Music would be pretty much the same and everyone would say the Rolling Stones were the most influential band of all time.

For the record... Playing with the Boys is the gayest song played over the gayest scene in American cinema outside of gay porn.

I had to google it to get the reference and this seems like a fair take

I really like the Beatles. Cant say I love them cuz half their catalogue kinda sucks.

I have zero use for the Stones. A few cool songs but imo they are unquestionably the most overrated band of all time

Come on. There's not a single Beatles song that measures up to this:

I learned recently that they’re revered in the UK. I made a joke about The Beach Boys being terrible to a British friend and he proceeded to lecture me on Brian Wilson’s greatness.
