That is crazy. Wonder if it will work. Id say it probably will. There's a lot of Wu fanatics

Ive been pondering writing my take on Raekwon vs Rza. Not sure anyone besides Bagels would enjoy it and he's heard it in person

So this is getting a lot of press. This is a great idea if only for the publicity.

Oddly Raekwon tweeted it out and seemed to be in full support of it. So is the beef with him and Rza even real?

Also Ghost and Rae dropped a new song yesterday

So, people are saying it will leak, but I highly doubt it. I believe Kanye figured out the very simple solution to that....only put it on one computer.

Wu-Tang Clan to produce one copy of new album Once Upon A Time In Shaolin
The 31-song double-album is apparently sitting in a Moroccan vault, and will be toured in galleries and festivals as if it were a 'single-sale collector's item'

Wu-Tang Clan have revealed the existence of a secret new album, only one copy of which will ever be produced. Recorded with producer Tarik 'Cilvaringz' Azzougarh, Once Upon A Time In Shaolin will reportedly be toured in museums, galleries and music festivals before it is sold to a single, wealthy fan.

"We're about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music," RZA told Forbes in a new interview. "We're making a single-sale collector's item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king."

Unlike the Wu-Tang Clan's troubled A Better Tomorrow album, which is due for wide release later this year, Once Upon A Time In Shaolin is already finished. The 128-minute, 31-song double-album is apparently sitting in a Moroccan vault, enclosed in a hand-carved nickel-silver box. It "encapsulates the Clan’s legendary dark funk and avant garde sound and is produced in the original Wu Tang style of the 90s," they wrote on a new website. But the songs will never be sold on iTunes and even the most ardent fans may never have a chance to hear it.

"I know it sounds crazy," Cilvaringz told Forbes. It's certainly unconventional. Before selling the album for a price "in the millions", they hope to tour the one-of-a-kind object, in its Yahya-designed box, to venues like the Tate Modern. Visitors will pay for admission and then be permitted to listen to Wu-Tang's new songs on closely monitored headphones. "One leak of this thing nullifies the entire concept," Cilvaringz said.

Though Cilvaringz first met RZA in 1997, jumping on stage during an Amsterdam Wu-Tang gig, this project began about five years ago. The entire Clan appears on the record, plus Redman, "FC Barcelona soccer players" and a singer called Bonnie Jo Mason - thought to be an alias for Cher. "It took a long time," Cilvaringz admitted; when he was finally finished, he couldn't abide the thought of releasing it and "see[ing] it die after a week".

Instead, inspired by the success of Nipsey Hussle's $100 mixtape, Cilvaringz and RZA landed on the idea of treating Once Upon A Time In Shaolin as a priceless art object. "The music industry is in crisis," they explain on their website. "The intrinsic value of music has been reduced to zero. Contemporary art is worth millions by virtue of its exclusivity ... By adopting a 400 year old Renaissance-style approach to music, offering it as a commissioned commodity and allowing it to take a similar trajectory from creation to exhibition to sale ... we hope to inspire and intensify urgent debates about the future of music."

They also hope to make a fortune. Once Upon A Time In Shaolin is presented as the first dispatch in a series of "private music" releases "for those able to commission musicians to create songs or albums for private collections". None of the other participating artists have been revealed.

Here's the story on Nipsey Hustle's $100 mixtape

Rapper Nipsey Hussle And The $100 Mixtape
Comment Now Follow Comments

“I let go of being some type of overnight superstar.” (Photo: Brian Petchers for Forbes)

Last month, unsigned rapper Nipsey Hussle made $100,000 by selling 1,000 copies of his latest mixtape, Crenshaw, for $100 each. Hussle – real name Ermias Asghedom – shifted every single CD in less than 24 hours at a pop-up store in his hometown of L.A. (Jay Z bought 100 copies.)

“One of my mentors suggested I read a book called Contagious,” says Asghedom, speaking to me in New York. “In the second chapter, a restaurant owner created the first $100 Philly cheese steak and got ridiculed but got a ton of prominent people interested.”

Asghedom had originally planned to release the mixtape for free on popular hip-hop download site, Datpiff.com. Instead, in the age of inevitable album leaks and declining record sales, he was inspired by the marketing madness of Philly’s $100 sandwich to launch a campaign entitled Proud2Pay, which rewards Asghedom’s most committed fans with concerts, priority access to new material, and one-of-a-kind gifts, like an old rap notebook or signed photo.

“It’s time we acknowledge what we all know: the music is free,” Asghedom said. “We shouldn’t force people to buy it, what we should do is create different methods to monetize the connection.”

The $100,000 raised from the mixtape went to expenses for Asghedom’s label, All Money In No Money Out, which Asghedom owns a quarter of. (The remaining equity is split evenly between Asghedom’s brother, Black Sam, Adam Andhban and Steven Donaldson.)

Currently unsigned and utterly independent, the 28-year-old Asghedom is not your average rapper. Though the modest watch on his arm has stopped, he arrives five minutes early for our interview, and describes himself as a “book junkie” as he looks around the Forbes library.

“I want to build a product company, I want it to be like an urban Sanrio eventually,” Asghedom muses, referencing the Hello Kitty monolith. “I want our focus to be products that can’t go digital, that can’t turn into ones and zeroes, because anything that can eventually will.”

Asghedom’s instinct – to monetize an exclusive, VIP experience that cannot be bootlegged like a Proud2Pay concert or novelty gift – is a swiftly expanding revenue stream in the music industry, which startups like Ground(ctrl) and Bandpage are already capitalizing on by selling special artist packages like backstage tours and studio sessions.

Proud2Pay is a new take on the concept of the deluxe edition – one Eminem will take to extremes this month with the release of a $300 limited run of The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

Still, $100 for a mixtape – a free record released between albums to sustain buzz or build a following for a rapper – is unprecedented. While the line between mixtape and album has been blurred by increasingly polished offerings – think A$AP Rocky’s 2011 LiveLoveA$AP and Chance The Rapper’s 2013 Acid Rap – can it still be a mixtape if you charge so much for it?

“When you say it’s a mixtape that has less value to people, but I think the fact that I charged $100 dealt with that issue,” Asghedom explained. “It was all original music too, so for all intents and purposes it was an album, but I didn’t want people to mistake it for my debut album.”

Asghedom hasn’t always been independent. Building a following with popular mixtapes in 2008, he signed to Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records in 2009. A regime change at the label soon stalled Asghedom’s debut, and he opted to leave in 2010. He paid nothing to get out of the deal and took his catalogue with him, but signed an override which stipulated that if he signed to another major label before the end of 2013, Epic Records would take a 5% cut on all earnings.

“I think a major label has to be like a venture capitalist,” Asghedom mused. “They have to put forth the resources – the relationships, staff and professionals to take an artist from 60-100.”

“But they have to respect the artist took his own situation from 0-60 and the only way to respect that is in the structure of the deal,” Asghedom said. He bemoaned labels wanting a cut of ancillary income like merchandise and touring, but was optimistic about the future of the music industry.

“CD sales are falling off the cliff but the artist is thriving,” Asghedom remarked. “More people consume our music and people are going to shows again because you can’t bootleg that, you can’t download the show.”

Asghedom is now preparing for the 2014 release of his debut album, Victory Lap, which will also be available for $100, a free download and at regular price on iTunes. He remains open to a record deal, though he says: “I let go of being some type of overnight superstar.” And as Asghedom leaves for an afternoon of label meetings, it seems there’s no stopping his hustle.

Not really a new guy though

Its weird though, because if Rza and Rae are really fighting over Rza producing everything than how does this album happen?

Raekwon wanted other producers on 8 Diagrams. Rza said hell no.

I believe Shaolin vs Wu Tang was Raekwon trying to show up Rza by saying look what we can do with other producers

It was a good album. But Wu tang = 8 rappers rapping over Rza beats. thats it

Rae will pretty much work with any producer but Rza for a whole album. Its a dumb power play.

A great Wu Tang album would do nothing but help Raekwon

This is genius! That's how you deal with the FACT that music is now free. Create a new paradigm. Or you can cry like a baby and sue your fans like douchebag Lars.

What's the latest on this?

I would guess something like that would have worked many years ago...

RZA’s the type of dude where, in the 90s, he ruled. Now it’s a new day. You’re not attached no more. It’s like being a coach and you won rings back in the day, but now your team is in ninth place. It’s time for a new fucking game plan. I sit here with integrity all the time. When it comes to my music. When it comes to my business. When it comes to the fans. I’m always going to give them the best of me. And I know the Wu-Tang Clan is built like that, but if they’re sitting there listening to one man, ain’t no "I" in "Team."

Raekwon can be a baby sometimes, but I think he's on point here. Rza's ego has probably hurt the group more than anything else the last 20 years.

Wow, he's not holding anything back. Id watch how far I go criticizing Rza.

Let us not forget what happened last time Rae tried to go without Rza

Raekwon's next effort, Immobilarity, came out in 1999 to mixed reviews, which were mainly attributed to the absence of RZA and Ghostface Killah

The Lex Diamond Story followed in 2003 on Universal Records, to mixed reviews as well (generally lukewarm critical reviews and wildly varying public reviews) and moderate success. Raekwon later voiced his dis-taste for the album's lack of promotion and budget and vowed that future releases would not suffer the same fate

He has some points. I used to be on Rza's side about him being the only producer of Official Wu Tang albums but I could see some superstar producers coming together for a great Wu album.

And it sounds like Raekwon is not too fond of Rza's movie career.

I hope they settle it.
