Yeah, the Graceland thing seems to be what they were going for, the African influences. But I would compare Paul Simon's take on African music to Elvis' take on black R&B and Vampires Weekend's version of African music to Pat Boone's take on R&B.
Boone's take on metal is awesome though...

We Will Rock You

do NOT pass go. Do not play that 2nd little ditty so many associate with it. 2:10 pent up angst ready to explode.

Possibly one of the lamest videos of all time, but hey.

I don't think that one would make my top 20 for the band, let alone top song. Not a bad song, but they've done better.

I totally agree they have done better songs. But in terms of a quintessential Rock Song, I always come back to this one. It's not fancy. Part of what I like about it is the simplicity. Strong lyrics and beat dramatically building up to a guitar solo...and then it ends. Always leaves me wanting more.

It should be short, succinct uptempo (or at the very least not plodding) and relatively self contained, i.e. be able to stand on its own without the context of a larger work or for that matter any specific cultural context. You should be able to play it for a non-Rock and Roll listener an say that this is what Rock and Roll Music is quintessentially. Think "Ace of Spades," "Blitzkreig Bop," "My Generation." I keep coming back to "Surrender" by Cheap Trick. "Ticket to Ride" may be the best Pop Rock song of all time. Yesterday I thought of both "Stone Free" and "Fire" before anyone mentioned Hendrix. But for me I am having a hard time coming up with any song written or recorded on anybody's best day that is a soup-to-nuts better Rock and Roll song than "19th Nervous Breakdown."

re: this and CH's comment about them being rich kids slumming it....

I could honestly care less if they're rich , or if its "extracurricular activity" for them
so is the only career arc you're willing to accept starting out being poor?
do you think that people like Rolling Stones or Jimmy Buffett are out there playing concerts because they're so genuine? no they're trying to make as much fucking money as the possibly can
i guess what it comes down to is do you care about the personal lives of the entertainers you enjoy?
if some dude in Mumford & Sons discovered a cure for AIDS tomorrow it wouldn't make me like their shitty ass music any more than i do now

It's about more than their personal lives. It's about their beliefs or at the very least selling a concept they may not believe in so you don't know they don't believe in it. I have no problem with artifice. Artifice has always been part of rock and roll. But the artifice needs to be artfully done. And that's something Vampire Weekend does not achieve. They have a style, but where is the substance?

I'm sure you agree rock is about more than pleasant sounds. Otherwise we would be lauding Hootie and the Blowfish and Dave Matthews band as among the greatest of all time.

That's how I feel about the Raspberries, "Go All The Way".

1. Props to RPB for realizing that the greatest "rock song(s) ever" can be post-1980. Songs don't have to stand the test of time in order to be considered "great". The rest of you guys sound old........ :D

2. 12 months ago Bagels felt the same way about VW that JORR and I (and everyone else) does....

3. The clear answer to this thread is "You remind me of my Jeep".

Ooh, "Layla" is a good one.

Anything by Tom Petty in the race? You can't get more All-American and mass-appeal than Tom Petty. Much like Sara Lee, nobody doesn't love Tom Petty. How about "I Won't Back Down"? I love the guitar work, and is there a more American sentiment for an American music form than a refusal to back down?

"American Girl" would be the one.

How can any Teenage Fanclub song be ahead of "The Concept"?

I skipped my HS Senior prom to see Afghan Whigs open for the Fannies at the Vic in 1992.
My band used to cover The Concept, there is such a vast array of TF songs to pick from....
god KNows it's true
everything flows
baby lee
start again
ain't that enough
alcoholiday
norman 3
the list goes on.....

TF, truly one of my favorite bands of all time.

I already weighed in, but still like all of the options. This is a pain in the ass. If you had to pick one from each band it is still almost impossible.

Doors - 5 to 1
Bowie - Rebel Rebel

"Heroes" is his best song. It has an emotional resonance that few rock songs achieve.
