You know who's good? That Courtney Barnett who sings that "Avant Gardner" song. That's a good song.

EDIT: Also Congoes suck(s)

Yeah, really. What do they contribute to this world? It's like, "well, here we are. An indie band." And that's it.

Charismatic front man with shit songs.
If they were playing in a dive bar you could walk home from
after getting shitfaced on a hot August night, you might think
you just saw the greatest show of your life. That's the impression they give me.

Courtney Barnett is awesome. Kongos are terrible. And if I hear that fucking Riptide song one more time, I'll set fire to a ukelele factory.

I like the comment on the YT video -
she's the female Australian Stephen Malkmus.
I'll have to give it a shot when I can turn it up, but I liked it.

I love me some Courtney Barnett. Great songwriter. She has another album coming in 2015.
She should keep writing songs, because she's good at it.

Sam, you only know that one song by her or just using that as reference?

Yup, just that one, but I am on board. I am woefully behind the times, spank.

In that case, check this one out. It's (swoon) fantastic:

Pretty much everything on A Sea of Split Peas is good. "History Eraser" and "Out of the Woodwork" are right up there, too. Go get.

That's the only song of hers I've heard too. That deadpan vocal style immediately reminded me of Lisa McGaughran, who played in a band with some women I used to know in Memphis.

Lori sings this one. It's probably more up spanky's alley:

i find that i can't really get too excited about a lot of new music...the indie stuff either sounds like derivative of pete yorn, derivative of 80's new wave, or derivative of sonic youth.

and i'd rather listen to the originals of all three.

Furious, have you heard woods' debut cd, Songs of Shame? I think that record is a quiet little masterpiece.

Negative, TM. Never heard the band until about 3 weeks ago on KEXP. I will eventually be all over the back catalog, but I need to get on Tindersticks first so I can give my boy Curious Hair some feedback. What do you think of Sun & Shade? I was going to give that a listen first.

I figured you would appreciate the GBV inclusion. That's where I first heard about Ty Segall.

Also, Broken Bells is just an enjoyable album throughout. The songs are strong.

i like to call bands like them 'festival rock'
Foster the People fits in this category as well

just non-offensive songs with big, loud , catchy choruses that play perfectly in front of 35,000 people

I think there's more going on with BB than FtP. I like that "Coming of Age" song, but not really down with them otherwise. The disco/syth pop/lite rock aspects just appeal to me in the context of the songs.

"No Matter What You're Told" has a good little synth riff. The rest of their album was a little boring.

Foster the People is completely boring.

"Pumped Up Kicks" is both one of the catchiest and one of the most insipid songs ever written.

Really?

I don't hear much Petty in a song like "Red Eyes."
