I am literally the least knowledgable music person on this board. If there are 2,000 logins to this board, I am number 2,000 in terms of my music knowledge and/or acumen. My music tastes consist of whatever I have downloaded over the past couple decades (and that ain't much). Tonight, for complicated reasons, I was asked to play some Simon and Garfunkel. So I searched for Sound of Silence. The first thing that popped up was an idiotic rip-off by some asshole from "Disturbed." MANY in the comments said his rendition is better than the original...

What a fucking joke... Art Garfunkel is an American treasure, and to compare his beautiful tenor voice to some asshole wannabe who probably organizes dog fights is a travesty. We should just concede to ISIS after reading that nonsense.

It's not the original, but it's a damn fine cover.

It's a terrible cover. Next time we have an outing, I will perform Sound of Silence better than that hack. Favrefan will hold me to it.

The second you go off-key, I'm punching you in the throat. I can hear quarter-tones, so good luck.

I'm going to stab leash in in the ass with a grill fork for even putting the knowledge of this thing in my head.

It's crap, you got that much right.

It's predictably engineered (esp the voice post-production) and orchestrated (oh neato, it just keeps getting louder and louder, how fucking interesting).

He made the song about himself instead of performing the song as though it were important.

At least in olden days when bands didn't have much talent they had the decency to bring in cats who did to quietly make hit records (if you're not hip to 'The Wrecking Crew', for example, go learn yourself something tonight or this weekend). Now they just stand there and say 'look how talented I can sound' rather than 'look how talented I actually am'. Same lie, less talent.

Then again, this is like the time I about put someone through a wall that (a) though that Metallica's version of 'Turn the Page' was the first and only one, and then (b) that it was better.

Why am I writing this? Worse, why are you reading it?

I would have gone with the traditional English ballad "Sandwich Fair."

Predictable? Yes. Over produced? Yes. But it's not crap.

And DT hearing quarter tones is for beginners. ;-)

Are you going to Sandwich Fair?
Turkey club, ham swiss or roast beef

Nah ... he's hardly what I would consider significantly over-hyped.

Two things;

1) You can remove music from this statement.
2) You don't rank dead last, as at the very least you are ahead of Phil McCraken

I did not like that version of the song. It seemed lame and sterile to me.

The official video, if you haven't seen it, is very cheesy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

Some of the comments about the video:
He sings so angrily but yet so beautifully

You can hear the pain in his voice. It is so beautiful.

That's not singing; that's someone that needs some Metamucil.

Does Megan by Bayside count (as one of the good covers)? Might be cheating since Josh Caterer of The Smoking Popes sings a verse.

I don't think you swallow the cock. Did you mean the semen or did you mean when he puts the cock in his mouth? Are you aware of the mechanics of oral sex?
