Rolling Stone just did this feature, and since I just saw Frusciante hijack the RHCP show last night, and I'm actuall not ashamed to admit I saw John Mayer channel SRV at a show last summer, I was wondering what the musical board members feeling were.

I don't mean Jimmy, SRV or Clapton, rather TODAY.
Who really rocks out?

I know, I'm going to get slammed for this, but I really like Jack White. I've mention his work with the raconteurs, but if you have ever heard the song 'ball and a biscuit' from white stripes' album elephant and other songs where they are not being as um, bizzare and he is just playing guitar, it's pretty good.

This is in no particular order:

1. Warren Haynes - Allman Brothers, The Dead, Govt. Mule
2. Keller Williams - Accoustic - must see him live
3. Fareed Haque
4. Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger - Umphrey's McGee
5. Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey - Moe.
6. Derek Trucks
7. Chris Michetti - RAQ
8. Robert Randolph
9. Luther Dickenson - North Mississippi All-stars
10. Steve Kimock

why all the shame for admitting love for the white stripes? imo, they are the most credible band out there right now.

psycory, you're right. ball and a buscuit is a killer song!

the preface for my white stripes comment is that I've noticed that they are a band that you either really like or you don't. So it's easier to get an opinion to people who don't like them with a preface. I agree that they are one of the better bands out there right now (though as I've mentioned before in this section, if you like jack white, pick up the raconteurs cd right now).

for some reason, the solo in "I don't want it" really gets to me. it's very simple but i don't know, it seems to be thick with emotion. not sure if that was dean or gene who laid it down though...

I agree. I'd have to believe it was Deaner layin' it down on that one, it seems like Gene mostly does rhythm work when he does contribute to tracks. "A Tear For Eddie" is unbelievable, also.

Here's a clip from their live DVD at the Vic. God I hope they do a club tour again sometime soon. Gener's lookin pretty bad these days, though

I agree with most of this, but I would put Keller down the list a bit. He is a great guitarist, but every song sounds the same, and he hasn't really progressed much since the first time I saw him in 1999. I would put the guys from Umphrey's right at the top, with Al from moe. right behind them.

Gene has been in and out of rehab for a while now. I hope he can get his shit together because Ween is awesome. Voodoo Lady, A Tear for Eddie, Piss up a rope, Spinal Meningitis, so many great songs.

I just placed them in a random order......I agree that Keller's sound can be redundant.....that's why I mentioned seeing him live. He plays a loopless show where he lays down all of these layers of sound and just jams............. he is perfect for a 90 minute set at a festival.

I wanted to add more accustic musicians from the bluegrass - Jam grass genre

Hot Buttered Rum
Leftover Salmon
Yonder Mountain
String Cheese
Cornmeal

There is a really good festival near Peoria over Memorial Day weekend called Summercamp. It is a lot of fun and I think you would love it Chus.

I have been 4 times and the price is great and if you like to camp, drink beer, listen to live music, and cut loose it is a really good time.

I know of summercamp. A bunch of my friends go every year. I have heard some horror stories of undercover cops hassling people for no reason. A group of my friends and I go camping every Memorial weekend at this really secluded place near the IL-WI border.

The police situation isn't that bad. Just because one is at a festival doesn't mean all laws go out the window.....last year there were approx. 9,000 people who attended the 3 day festival and there were a total of 30 arrests. That's not too bad............

John Mayer pisses me off to no end. That guy can fucking play. He is absolutely amazing, yet all he puts out is that shitty puss rock bullshit shitty shit music that fucking blows. I just want him to put out a 70 minute album of like 8-12 blues jams. He could have his pick of guest musicians and put out some fantastic music. Instead, we get "Your Body is a Wonderland and I am a Limped Dicked Fucking Whore Shitty Asshole."

Robert Randolph is fantastic. Watch for them on Austin City Limits. It was a great performance.

Jack White and any project he is associated with is a pimple on the collective ass of rock and roll. People need to stop thinking he is some revolutionary. Dude sucks.

"Are You Experienced" is on The Tube (Comcast digital channel 197) right now. Hendrix was no of this Earth.

I honestly believe that.

...see this is what I'm talking about with jack white, when i talk about music with friends he is a take it or leave it topic. I would never say he is revolutionary or the man to save rock music, I think he's pretty good.

But I agree about John Mayer really good but puts out too much wuss stuff, basically so he can make a ton on money, oh and get laid...and seeing who he has been with, I can see why he does it.

The show I saw he did a cover of "Pride & Joy" that completely changed my perception of him. I thought that the John Mayer Trio was a step in the right direction for him, but then he crossed back to the pop star crap.

I think the best overall guiutarists are in Bands like Boris, Pelican, Suno)))) and Electric Wizard and some of the other metal and math rock bands, but I dont listen to a whole lot of that. And the two guys that are always shredding at Guitar Center are pretty sweet.

I find his "easy listening" discs - Colma and Electric Tears - to be his most enjoyable. His other stuff sounds like an 8-bit Nintendo soundrack on angel dust (Faith No More's best album, by the way).

i guess for nostalgic reasons, i like 8 bit nintendo music. especially Yoshihiro Sakaguchi's work.

i don't own those two discs, but i've heard parts of electric tears and liked it.

"angel dust"...yes good stuff.
