I was thinking about this because of all the artists threads.

I always considered the 60s probably the best Rock and Roll era for music.

But now I have to reconsider. The 80s are really the best.

Let's do the math.

Micheal Jackson
Prince
Bruce Springsteen
Motley Cure
Madonna
Early 80s 'Second' British Invasion music
Billy Joel
Judas Priest
Queen
Whitney Houston
Huey Lewis

I can go on and on. But what was the best part - all these artists were so diverse. Black, white, male, female, rich, poor, metal, pop, rock. But WE ALL LOVED THEM and we the fans were equally as diverse!

Yep. Love all that music. Even some of the hair-metal bands I enjoyed.

I was at a sandwich shop in SF last xmas season. The guys working there were like 18/19/20. Early college or late hs. All these guys were talking about was music from the 80s. How Prince wore his lapels, how Micheal did the moonwalk, how they loved Whitesnake.

Made me feel old but also proud I lived thru that time. I wanted to interrupt them and brag I lived during those times. To these kids today, the 80s are like a magical mythological time. The new 1950s.

That list gets so flaccid so fast that it needs a stunt cock. Talk about petering out.

It's the Huey Lewis that gets me. Still, he's fun to sing along to when I am in class.

That is when MTV was at its best. The 90s were great for hip hop and alternative music, but I will listen more to the 80s.

I find it interesting that nobody remembers what made some of those songs great were music videos.

I remember The Cars videos were awesome. But i heard some douche dj on the radio describing them as so bad. WTF. Is that what ppl think now?

I even saw a Hall and Oates video that is totally 80s I had not seen in decades -

remember this one :

Huey Lewis was huge back in the day. Remember that blonde chick on the boat in the 'I want a new drug' video? In my lifetime, that was one memorable boner.

MJ- overrated
Prince- good
Springsteen- one of the greats
crue- gay
madonna- literally gay
second british invasion- which is outclassed thoroughly by the 90's British rock
joel- should be tried as a war criminal
Judas Priest- fuck
Queen- good
Whitney Houston- you're gay
Huey Lewis- literally American Psycho

80's sucked

The Smiths, U2, XTC, R.E.M., the weird Tom Waits albums, Kate Bush. Not the best decade but a lot better than most give it credit for.

It’s nice for a change of pace. Some of it nostalgia for youth and even college as for some reason 80’s music was big 93-96 at college and dome because I just like hearing different music from time to time. There is an awful lot of garbage out there mind you.

The '80s are hard to cordon off as as a decade because New Wave and post-punk straddle the late '70s and early '80s. Do you consider the Clash an '80s band? The five great Talking Heads albums are 77-78-79-80-83, but mid-decade Talking Heads sucks dick.

This is the 80s music of my college experience—a bit more on the alternative side than the original list posted. Combine them, and that’s some great, diverse music.

The popularity of “Stranger Things” has brought a lot of great 80’s music back—my kid’s are all listening that soundtrack—especially The Clash.

Sure.

Rush live from '79-90 were on top of their game.

You see "London Calling" a lot in '80's album patchworks, or the first Van Halen album, or the first Cars album. I think they "feel " more '80's to people.

Bob Mould/Husker Du and then bands like TMBG also remind me of the 80s....

Oh.. it’s a strange attachment for me too. I’ll never be able to explain it to myself let alone anyone else.

I know what you mean. "Experimental Film" was in (written for?) a Homestar Runner cartoon that came out the summer I graduated high school, and the exuberance of the song goes so well with summer and getting out of high school. Yeah!

Somehow 80's pop has never lost its shine to me. It doesn't get stale like classic rock regardless of how many times I hear it. Its probably the only thing on the FM dial that I won't turn skip past.

Maybe its because of the memories it brings back for you?

It's fun. Sometimes mindless, sometimes catchy, sometimes a little iconic. It's attached to movies, videos, or moments. A lot of it is different within the decade. I listen to the 80s channel quite a bit and (recently) my son told my cousin how much he liked it. My cousin told him it was crap. It was a goofy conversation to listen to. I love it.

I agree with this. I can go back and listen to The Pet Shop Boys or The Smiths far more often than Led Zeppelin.

I liked their indifference to all things masculine. That might sound like damning faint praise, but I mean it; they didn't seem to care, but they didn't act like they wanted you to know that they didn't care. They were just kind of cool with who they were and it produced some interesting sounds.

They got together in 82 but my introduction was Lincoln and Flood. So I was probably in Junior high, maybe a freshman when I stumbled across them (I'm sure it was someone's brother home from college that introduced my friend and me to them). Or sister I suppose.

Saw them twice in concert when they were touring in 94/95. Fun concerts, some of my favorite memories of those years of my life.
