I have to say that number one on this list would have to be Sting, because of his album, "The Dream of the Blue Turtles." Sting is a musical genius anyway, but there are songs on this album that are absolute masterworks, from "Russians" to 'Fortress Around Your Heart." I think better than anyone, except maybe Pink Floyd, Sting wove jazz instrumentation into his music and this album in particular and fused it with rock and classical elements. You really can't beat the lyrics on "Russians" with its profound poetry, which captures the zeitgeist of the Cold War and Russia's place. Even after this album, Sting wrote so many good songs like "Streets of Gold", "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You", and "All This Time" off of Soul Cages.

I agree with Sting ,the solo stuff is awesome. Could never have been done while in the constrants of the police.

Sting solo does not compare to the Police

I thought I posted in this thread but I guess the internet monster ate it. Anyway, Peter Gabriel is the obvious choice here, who was not only better on his own but made Genesis better by leaving. Solo Sting doesn't come close to the Police's short but brilliant run, omgwtf.

Well for us hard core Genesis fans Id disagree on Mr Gabriel but his solo career is pretty fucking great. Agree wholeheartedly on Dur Sting.

I'm not a hardcore Genesis fan, but I like A Trick of the Tail and Duke more than The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Selling England by the Pound. I don't think that would be the case if I had gotten into them sooner than I did.

ToTT and Wind and Wuthering are the 2 best Phil era Genesis albums.

I agree also on Peter Gabriel, especially for "So", which is classic album, but I would have to give the edge to Phil Collins as being the better single artist post-Genesis for his body of work. No Jacket Required is Collin's signature album with Sussudio, Don't Lose My Number, One More Night and of course, Take Me Home. The extended mix of Take Me Home is great.

I also think that while Diamond Dave in Van Halen was superb, his solo stuff with Steve Vai holds up very well. I remember liking all his crazy videos on MTV for the songs on Eat Em and Smile like Going Crazy. That song is pure nirvana with excellent drumming. Dave could have done without the spandex pants, though. The great fashion disaster of 80s groups.

i hate it when some guy leaves a good group to go solo. I guess Sting did pretty well after he left the Police but what has he done in the last 20 years?

Fogerty had a good run after CCR in the late 80s/ early 90s but nothing since.

Dr. Dre was better after NWA broke up.

Eric Clapton was better after The Yardbirds.

Terry Kath was better after he left Chicago...

If we're talking Genesis, then Mike + The Mechanics were twelve times better than any Genesis lineup.

Genesis is an excellent example. Both Collins and Gabriel were better as solo acts.

What about Ozzy with Randy Rhodes? That's a tough call versus him with Sabbath and Iomi on guitar.

Blizzard of Ozz has to be one of all-time great rock albums. Every track is good, especially Mr. Crowley, Crazy Train and Revelation Mother Earth.

That's a good question. I'd say the move at the time turned out to be the best thing for all parties, but as much as I love Wind and Wuthering and some other post-Gabriel albums, none of it reached the creative heights of Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, or Selling England by the Pound (but Lamb Lies Down was clear evidence--despite some cools songs--that they couldn't continue as is).

Pretty much every Jazz musician worth a damn, not the least of which were Trane, Herbie, and Bill Evans off the top of my head.

Kenny Rogers
Paul Simon
Tupac
Ice Cube
Perhaps Steve Winwood but Traffic had some damn fine tracks ... you can keep The Spencer Davis Group though
Cher
Neil Young
Curtis Mayfield

Isn't Michael Jackson the obvious choice here?
