It really is not that good, mostly has a lot of crap that should never have been put on it, akin to Zeppelin's Coda material. There are three decent songs, Dear Prudence, Piggies and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The arrangement of the later is kind of annoying, even with Clapton playing the solo. They should have stuck with George's original acoustic version of the song, which can be heard on Anthology with the string accompaniment. If I wanted to listen to a quintessential McCartney song from the Beatles, it wouldn't be Blackbird, but Yesterday. From the later years, the White Album has to be the worst from the Beatles. I'm not a fan of St. Pepper either. The truly great Beatles album is Magical Mystery Tour, which even Jimmy Page had praised. I never get tired of it. Abbey Road and Let it Be are excellent, too. |

Bad take. Maybe five songs that I would pitch to the rubbish bin. |

I forgot about Mother Nature's Son from George. That one is good, too. |

Rube's posts are really not that good. Mostly has a lot of crap akin to leash's recent post history. |

Wild Honey Pie is like a fork on a chalkboard thanks to yoko...otherwise, it's an amazing dump of greatness from both John and Paul. |

There’s a 12 CD version of the White Album that was put out by Purple Chick, I’d check for that because many of the stripped-down/alternate versions are superior, imo. For instance, there’s a more stripped-down version of Glass Onion that is legendary as far as I’m concerned, but the White Album version is a little candy-ass with some of the overdubs. I’m sure Rube’s issue is studio arrangements. |

Yea, there is some filler in there but it's a double album so of course there is. I still think it's a great album though. That said, Piggies is the worst Beatles song. Let It Be is my least favorite Beatles album. |

Not even the worst on the album, which is "Honey Pie." Yellow Submarine is the worst album, if it counts. I love "It's All Too Much" but that Side 2 of orchestral stuff is useless. And "Yellow Submarine," there's another contender for worst Beatles song. |

I happen to like the earlier albums, but people should just be glad that The Beatles and Elvis recorded a ton of music before their death. Some of the modern bands milk an album for 3 or 4 years. I can't think of a current day specific band, but can you imagine if the Beatles were around for 12 years and only had three records? |

Hockey Gay wrote: That said, Piggies is the worst Beatles song. Piggies? Paul likes Piggies. He made a mention of it in the Anthology video when talking about the White Album. The solo with the harpsichord and cello is tremendous musicianship. Terrific polyphony at that. It has a very British melody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhY1x8CpWeI There's too many weird songs on the album that amount to just noise. Even George Martin criticized it for having too many filler songs. Weren't many of these songs written during and after their trip to India to visit the yogi, Maharishi Mahesh? That explains it, because they were trying to achieve Samadhi in meditation and not taking enough drugs. I read a review today of the White Album that said the only good thing about Back in the U.S.S.R. is the outro that leads into Dear Prudence. Ha! Revolution might be one of the first songs recorded with heavy distortion. You don't hear that sound on any other Beatles song, I don't think. Who knows if they copied off of Hendrix or vice versa? Hendrix covered Sgt. Pepper in his early days. If you have the chance, listen to the Demo version of Dear Prudence. Magnificent vocals. I like it as much as the studio version, especially with a little grass. Stephen Stills 4+20 borrowed heavily from this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNpNiIyJaYk George's acoustic version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rs-cFctj6k |

You bring up a good point. The Beatles, love em or hate em, left a lot of material, so much that even old people like myself (I don't consider myself an expert) can find something new to discover all these years later. I don't think I've ever heard the White Album front to back. I love Revolver and Rubber Soul though. I think that the 'milking an album' thing may be turning on it's own face now though. You have to be a pretty beloved artist to keep a devoted audience at bay for so long before they just quit you. You've got bands like Guided By Voices who have released every Budweiser belch Bob Pollard has ever uttered, and t's just too much... Then there's shit like Tool and System Of A Down (even RATM) - the unholy triumvirate of overloved, overrated bands that have spent the last 20+ years keeping their diehards on pins and needles waiting for a new album. It's not worth the emotional investment. I will say, I about lost my mind when 'mbv' seemingly came out of nowhere 5 years ago, and I'm eagerly anticipating whatever they put out next (this year, allegedly). |

If you look at a band like U2 the process for an album and a tour could be like 3 or 4 years. There is so much more in the process now. Since it is much harder to sell physical or digital copies of music now, the new album is used to sell the tour. The Beatles music in the studio transitioned from mono to stereo. It was revolutionary in the history of studio recording. There is no reason to be mad at the White Album. It's Yoko Ono, who was the ugly no talent hack who scooped up John Lennon and his white piano. |

The white LP is just fine. I feel that is would be considered better without some of the filler. Three sides would be perfect but if you have three you need 4 back then. As standard LP maybe not enough but holy crap could that have been a classic depending on how they chose tracks. |

It is pretty amazing with songs like Something, I Want You, Here Comes the Sun, You Never Give Me Your Money, Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight. The end of "I Want You" is superb with Ringo's drumming. Paul shows his chops on bass. It's one of the heaviest and longest Beatles' tracks and a masterpiece. Great stoner album. It would have been hard for the Beatles to have topped this, had they stayed together. |
