I gotta listen to this album front to back again sometime soon. It's great.

Oh yeah, near and dear to my heart for years now. Thanks for remembering! I love how the whole sound of the album can be described as a deeply sad person cheering himself up by force. We've all been there.

"You Get What You Give" is obviously the standout and one of the best songs of the '90s, but "Someday We'll Know" deserved a lot more airplay than it got, "Gotta Stay High" deserved any at all, and "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending" is the best Afghan Whigs song they never wrote. I've never nailed down for sure whether "A Love Like That" was written for the album or came later (it seems to have similar chord changes to the title track), but if it was written then but missed the cut, then oh, what a loss. I wish there were more Gregg Alexander songs out there to fall in love with, but there really aren't as many as there should be. "In the Neighborhood" and "Save Me From Myself" off his debut Michigan Rain seem to hint pretty well at what's to come, though the production borders on the Steinmanian.

Never heard that Rundgren cover of "Someday We'll Know" but the Mandy Moore one is a guiltless pleasure.

Sounds a lot like Karl Wallinger and World Party. Pretty sure I've mistaken New Radicals for them on more than one occasion.

Yeah, get your own sound!

That was my beef with them from the get go.

I could be wrong, but I think that John Oates is doing the main lead vocal on the Todd/Hall and Oates SWK cover linked upthread.
I love that whole album as well.
And speaking of World Party, just saw that they/he will be finally releasing a new album after like 20 years soon, and he's reissuing the WP catalog on vinyl. I remember my private middle school teacher/mentor was a huge Waterboys/World Party fan back in the day and she used to play homemade cassettes during school hours and I distinctly associate 'Ship Of Fools' with that time of my life. Goodbye Jumbo was their best album, and although I saw them at Metro during the Egyptology touring cycle, I didn't really care much for that album.
We'll see what Karl has left soon enough, I guess.

Another thing I gleaned frmo that Stereogum article is that I had no idea YGWYG was used on Glee. I never watched that show, and that video clip reassured me that I made the right decision. Embarrassing.

I agree, Bang! in particular has a pretty similar sound.
