Post subject:  Nut replacement

I need to have the nut replaced on both my crappy Epiphone SG and my Les Paul. I haven't inspected the SG in a while, but the Les Paul nut is glued into the faceplate above the fretboard. According to this guide, removing the nut / glue isn't that big of a deal, but I wonder if anyone has had any experience doing this, or can recommend a shop that sells bone/pearl nuts and would do the job for me at a reasonable cost. I'm inclined to go to Modern Music in Lisle, as I've rented from them in the past and they seem alright, but I have very little experience over the past few years with guitar stores in the city or suburbs, so any recommendations or suggestions are welcome.

Here are some choices for you SP.

If you can't find what you need, perhaps the whole package is a better alternative.

Doug, you're probably right. For posterity's sake, if anyone else runs into the same issue, I'll keep track of my experience here.

So far, Avenue N in Wicker Park was a disappointment. Their luthier is out of town until next week, and they charge quite a bit (I was quoted a base of $65 per guitar) for the job. Turned me off pretty quick.

It was recommended to me that I check out Specimen, but they're closed Wednesdays, and they seem a little too upscale for such a routine job. I'll get in touch with them tomorrow.

Park Avenue Music in Lombard is an okay shop I've had limited experience with. I purchased a Seagull acoustic from them back in high school, and it's a great guitar that's held up all these years. I believe they are one of only a few dealers, so that was a nice find. I was quoted $35 per guitar over the phone, which is considerably less than Avenue N, but I have to wait for them to get Gibson pearl blanks in. I left my name/number and asked to be called back when the order comes in.

I'm leaning towards Park Ave, but if Specimen is surprisingly cheap, or my girlfriend's dad can put me in touch with "his guy" out in Yorkville (a guy who literally works out of an old barn on his property), I might go either of those routes.
