Just got introduced to this cat, although I had definitely heard his songs my whole life (just never knew who he was). I was sitting around a campfire with my dad, who was talking about a concert he went to in the 60's with a dude with big, white pompadour who was walking around pouring shots down people's throats during the concert. The name even escaped him for a moment until I Googled it, and then it all came back to him. Said he never saw a show where a guy gave more of himself to his crowd. Even James Brown sort of gave him props by having him on his show, although he pretty much tried to embarrass him by implying that he ripped off JB's act. I also had no idea he wrote 'Last Kiss' that Pearl Jam re-did. Also, the bass & guitar cycling rhythm that introduces the Blues Brothers act is from his song 'Can't Turn You Loose', and I think it was used in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood recently. The music, and the way this guy gets into it is top notch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHbCLLtm-6M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_O_101FSYs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL1l49En-v0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTY78K_t84c |

He is one of those strange bridge figures in popular music. He was friends with Elvis and James Brown. Jaco Pastorius was his bass player when he was like 16. |
