None can top Queen at Live Aid in 1985. Not Zep, the Beatles, Rollings Stones or anyone.

I think the greatest live concert, for the sheer complexity, cost, and cool factor, was Roger Waters' tour of The Wall.

Queen takes the cake, but this performance by Cream of White Room at the Albert Hall in '68 was outstanding. Ginger Baker just thrashes the drums on this one.

I think Tony Iommi borrowed his early guitar sound with the distortion from Clapton, like Sabbath's Paris 1970 show. It was Cream that truly invented heavy metal.

Queen come on when Elton Jon goes off that they are stealing the show tells you something. Plus Phil collins did duty on two countries.
Then they even beat Hendrix at Woodstock. so close the book. They were supposedly done broken up and they came out and fucking blew the heavens out
Say what you will about Plant, Freddie was far far superior.
The only one I would place close was U2 at Red Rock

I thought the story with Iommi was that he lost his fingertips in an industrial accident and was forced to play with distortion because of it.

If you believe Tony Iommi, then yes, that's the story.

The Doors performing the End in Toronto in '67 has to be in the top five. The song is like the scene in Willy Wonka when they take the ship through the tunnel, complete madness but a masterpiece at the same time. About half way through Robby Krieger's guitar goes out of tune, and Manzarek helps him get back into tune. The more I listen to the Doors, the more I appreciate how good John Densmore was on drums.

Some of the versions on Youtube are edited and don't have the complete song, but this one is in fairly decent quality.

This is a video of the surviving members talking about the performance. Mick Jagger was there that night, I believe.

This song is a like a drunken spiel by a first year creative writing student.

The End? Yeah. Totally. I used to play that when I had to take a shit (11:41 baby. Enough time for a cig and a crap).
The doors are cool but man the lyrics are just... dumb.

I was right about Clapton's influence on Iommi. Here's a Guitar World interview where Iommi says as much.

GUITAR WORLD: The blues were very big in England when you started playing with bands in the early and mid Sixties. What other bands were you listening to?

I liked John Mayall’s Blues Breakers. I thought they were really good. Of course Eric Clapton was a part of that. I liked the work that Clapton did later with Cream, but I really liked what he was playing with John Mayall. I listened to all kinds of blues records. I really can’t remember any names of the players because I listened to a lot of different things. From that I got into bluesy jazz, and it was the same thing.

Yeah for a while the entire Clapton is God thing was bigger than it needed to be. But many count him as an essential influence.

He sucks. Playing "Layla" while sitting down is worse than if he sat down to piss.

If we really want to get serious, then Sabbath playing Children of the Grave at the Live Cal Jam in '74 has to be mentioned.

Geezer's going nuts. For headbangers only.
